Cubby O’Brien was the second-most-popular Mouseketeer on the original run of the Mickey Mouse Club, after Annette Funicello.

He was one of the few Mouseketeers featured in all three seasons (1955-1958), and he was the only musician among the Mouseketeers who was permitted to play on-camera. (He was a drummer.)

His real name wasn’t Cubby — it was Carl. “Cubby got his nickname from his mother, who thought he looked like a bear cub as an infant.”

But the public knew him as Cubby, so Cubby is what popped up in the U.S. baby name data:

  • 1959: 5 baby boys named Cubby
  • 1958: 8 baby boys named Cubby
  • 1957: 10 baby boys named Cubby
  • 1956: 6 baby boys named Cubby [debut]
  • 1955: unlisted
  • 1954: unlisted

The baby name Cubby appeared in the data for the last time in 1963.
