Rocky Jones, Space Ranger was a sci-fi TV show that aired from February to November, 1954.

As a Space Ranger, Rocky served as a “space policemen” who defended the Solar System against evil-doers. He was always accompanied by his navigator, Vena Ray.

Only 39 episodes were made, but plenty of exotic-sounding character names were packed into the short-lived show:

Juliandra
Moanna

*Some sources call her Cleolanthe.

Would you use any of the above on a real-life baby? If so, which one(s)?

Usage of the baby name Rocky peaked in the 1950s, but it’s hard to say how much of the usage (if any) is attributable to the series.

  1. Juliandra is a pretty name. Mostly, I noticed the lack of female names compared to the long list of males. I was the 1950s so not really a surprise!

  2. Yarra is the river in Melbourne in Australia, loosely meaning “flowing”. It doesn’t get used as a baby name much because the Yarra is considered rather ugly.

Agar is a type of gelatin made from algae, so vegetarians can have jelly. It would be funny as a baby name.
