How popular is the baby name Bay in the United States right now? How popular was it historically? Use the popularity graph and data table below to find out! Plus, see all the blog posts that mention the name Bay.
The graph will take a few moments to load. (Don't worry, it shouldn't take 9 months!) If it's taking too long, try reloading the page.
The digital newspaper Berkeleyside recently published an article about real-life baby names inspired by various locations within (or near) the California city of Berkeley. The article mentioned the following names:
Ada (for Ada Street)
Addison (for Addison Street)
Adeline (for Adeline Street)
Ashby (for Ashby Avenue)
Bay (for San Francisco Bay)
Berkeley
Cedar (for Cedar Street)
Edith (for Edith Street)
Ellis (for Ellis Street)
Linden (for Linden Avenue)
Parker (for Parker Street)
Rose (for Rose Street)
Sibley (for Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve, in Oakland)
Tilden (for Charles Lee Tilden Regional Park)
Equally interesting, though, was the inclusion of Berkeley’s top ten baby names overall “between 2023 and 2024” (which I’m assuming means 2023 and 2024 combined), according to data from the City of Berkeley’s Office of Vital Statistics. The names were ordered alphabetically:
Angel
Dylan
Julian
Liam
Luna
Mateo
Mia
Noah
Oliver
Zoe
I’ve never posted rankings for the city of Berkeley before, but I regularly post rankings for the nearby county of Sonoma — here’s 2023, and here’s 2024.
The U.S. National Park Service has a birthday coming up!
When the NPS was created on August 25, 1916, there were only 35 national parks and monuments. (The world’s first, Yellowstone, had been established in 1872.)
Nowadays the agency oversees 411 units. These units are located in the 50 states and beyond, and include national monuments (82), national historic sites (78), national parks (59), national historical parks (50), national memorials (30), national battlefields (11), national seashores (10), national lakeshores (4), national scenic trails (3), and more.
Let’s celebrate the upcoming centennial with more than 100 baby names that pay tribute to the national parks specifically:
The derivation of Kenai is unknown, but it could come from either Dena’ina Athabascan (“big flat” or “two big flats and river cut-back” or “trees and brush in a swampy marsh”), Russian (“flat barren land”), or Iniut (“black bear”).
For all you national park lovers out there: What other park-inspired names can you come up with?
P.S. I just learned (Nov. 2024) that the Utah Hockey Club has adopted a Labrador retriever puppy named Archie after Arches National Park, located near Moab. :)
…but I do have to wonder about the influence of the slang term “bae” here.
After all, 2012 was the year the Bae Caught Me Slippin’ meme took off. And 2014 was the year “bae” went mainstream with a Pharrell song (“Come Get It Bae”) and several high-profile articles (in TIME, Esquire, and The Atlantic).
What do you think — is Bae simply a variant of Bay, or could it be a baby name inspired by internet slang (à la Ily)? Or is it a bit of both?
Please note that I did include names in the gray area between one syllable and two syllables. The deciding factor on these particular names (such as Charles, Miles, and Noel) will be your own interpretation/accent, so be sure to test the names out loud before making any final decisions.
Many of these names also happen to be unisex, so they appear on the one-syllable girl names list as well.
