It’s hard to put into words just how bizarre 2020 was.

Despite this…people still had babies in 2020, and people still paid attention to pop culture in 2020. (In fact, thanks to quarantine, many people probably paid a lot more attention to pop culture than usual last year.) So, let’s put the seriousness of 2020 aside for a second and kick off the annual Pop Culture Baby Name Game!

Of course, “pop culture” includes not just things like movies and music and social media, but also anything that was in the news — including COVID-19, Black Lives Matter, and the U.S. presidential election.

  • “I’d bet on the rise of virtue names, or at least modern version of virtue names, like Brave/Bravery, Courage, Honor, etc. And I’d say names like Legend, Messiah, Legacy, Major, King, will probably rise some more too.” (Skizzo)
  • “I think it will also affect which media influence names this year. Eg we’ll miss out on names inspired by Olympic athletes, but might see even more from Netflix and YouTube.” (Clare)

NBA legend Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash in January. (His daughter Gianna died in the accident as well.)

Doja & Amala

Singer Doja Cat (real name: Amalaratna Zandile Dlamini), whose 2018 debut album was entitled Amala, has become increasingly popular.

Isaias

Hurricane Isaias — after weakening to a tropical storm — caused damaged along East Coast of the U.S. in late July and early August.

Ahmaud, Breonna, George, Rayshard

…or the name of any other unarmed black American who was shot and killed by a police officer this year (or late last year).

2 Filipino babies named Covid?

At least two babies in the Philippines may have been named Covid after Covid-19, the acronym for “coronavirus disease 2019.”

Neither name — “Covid Rose” or “Covid Bryant” — has been confirmed yet, but both were among the top Twitter trends in the Philippines last week. (It was said that Covid Bryant’s middle name was inspired by late NBA legend Kobe Bryant.)

Update: Since I wrote this post a couple of days ago, I’ve both seen confirmation of Covid Rose’s name and heard about two more babies in the Philippines (allegedly) named after the virus:

  • Covid Lorraine (born in North Cotabato)
  • Coviduvidapdap Santos Dela Cruz (first name a portmanteau of Covid and “dubi dubi dap dap” [vid], nonsense words from the novelty song “Beep Beep Beep Ang Sabi Ng Jeep” by Filipino singer Willie Revillame)

If you’re on the hunt for baby names with a numerological value of 8, you’re in luck! Because today’s post features hundreds of 8-names.

Before we get to the names, though — how do we know that they’re “eights” in numerology?

Turning names into numbers

Here’s how to calculate the numerological value of a name.

First, for each letter, come up with a number to represent that letter’s position in the alphabet. (Letter A would be number 1, letter B would be number 2, and so forth.) Then, add all the numbers together. If the sum has two or more digits, add the digits together recursively until the result is a single digit. That single digit is the name’s numerological value.

For instance, the letters in the name Wyatt correspond to the numbers 23, 25, 1, 20, and 20. The sum of these numbers is 89. The digits of 89 added together equal 17, and the digits of 17 added together equal 8 — the numerological value of Wyatt.
