According to provisional data from National Records of Scotland, the most popular baby names in Scotland in 2014 were Emily and Jack.

The provisional data accounts for the first 11 months of 2014; finalized data will be out on March 11, 2015.

The fastest climbers within the top 20 were Noah, Max and Adam for boys and Grace and Freya for girls.

Newbies to the boys’ top 20 were Aaron and Cameron. They replaced Alfie and Riley.

Newbies to the girls’ top 20 were Eilidh and Anna. They replaced Erin and Eva.

(Did you know that Eilidh, in combination with the surname McCorquodale, was determined to be the 10th most Scottish name of all time?)

Scotland’s General Register Office has just announced the top baby names in Scotland for 2011:

Fast-risers outside the top ten include Riley, Mason and Ruaridh for boys and Kara, Sophia and Lilly for girls.

As far as very Scottish names go, there were 192 babies named Eilidh, 15 named Mhairi and 9 named Murdo, but none named Alexina, Angusina, Murdina or Williamina.

One-of-a-kind names include Boo-Tiger (boy), Eniileri (girl), Jesuslovesme (boy), Holly-Madison (girl), Iowa (girl), Laedemi (boy), Legion (boy), Occeanna-Lake (girl), Process (boy), Texas (girl), Thora-Toshihime-Kyoko-Freya (girl) and Willieboy (boy).

Which names are the most Scottish?

Several years ago, UK marketing firm CACI came up with a way to quantify the “Scottishness” of a name.

They looked at tens of millions of forenames and surnames across the UK and asked: are these names more common in Scotland, or in England and Wales? Based on the answers, they calculated “Scottishness” scores for full names.

They set the average at 100. Names like Ewen McGregor (270) and David Cameron (153) scored higher (i.e. were more Scottish) than average. Names like Gordon Brown (95) and Sean Connery (34) scored lower.

I was surprised about Williamina and Alexina. I guess didn’t realize these two names were so distinctly Scottish. Both are rare here in the U.S.

Update, 3/22/16: Some incredibly Scottish names — Caledonia, Corryvreckan, Highlande — popped up on on birth certificates in Scotland in 2015.
