Jonathan Jasper “Jack” Sullivan married Bertha Phillips in early 1909. The North Carolina farm couple went on to have sixteen children — nine sons and seven daughters. Their names, in order, were…
Cretta (born in 1910)
Leland (1912)
Rosa (1913)
Woodrow (1916)
Wilmar (1918)
Joseph (1919)
Dorothy (1921)
Virginia (1923)
Irving (1924)
Blanche (1925)
C.D. (1927)
Geraldine (1928)
Marverine (1930)
Billy (1932)
Tom (1934)
Gene (1938)
Here’s more about Gene’s name:
Gene Autry Sullivan, the youngest of the children and the one who organizes the [family] reunion each year, said he was told he was named after legendary cowboy movie star Gene Autry “because his parents had run out of names by then.”
Back in 1940, the baby name Sierra debuted in the U.S. baby name data rather impressively. It was the top newbie name of the year, in fact.
1942: 13 baby girls named Sierra
1941: 24 baby girls named Sierra
1940: 32 baby girls named Sierra [debut]
1939: unlisted
1938: unlisted
What was behind the debut?
“Sierra Sue,” a song that was a #1 hit in 1940 for Bing Crosby. A version by The Glenn Miller Orchestra also charted the same year.
The song was actually an updated version of an older song written by Joseph B. Carey (a “blind San Francisco organist”) in 1916. Carey died in 1930, and in 1939 the Shapiro, Bernstein & Co. sheet music company secured the rights to the song from Carey’s widow. The song “was probably revived because of the popularity of other western-style songs in the late ’30s.”
And, yes, a large number of the babies named Sierra in 1940 also had the middle name “Sue.” :) Here’s a Sierra Sue who was born in Kansas in 1940.
The Spanish word sierra, which refers to a mountain range, can be traced back to the Latin word serra, meaning “saw.”
In November of the next year, a movie called Sierra Sue starring Gene Autry was released. Here’s the scene in which Gene sings the title song:
Decades later, in 1985, usage of the name began to rise rapidly thanks to soap opera character Sierra Estaban from As the World Turns. Sierra was a top-100 name from 1993 to 2004, peaking in 1999 at 49th (just below Jordan, just above Sara).
Once upon a time, the U.S. Social Security Administration put out annual twin name rankings (that is, rankings of the pairs of baby names given most frequently to sets of U.S. twins).
It all started in 2005 with simple, single-list rankings. Things got more interesting in 2009, when the SSA began splitting the rankings into gender-specific sub-rankings. Then in 2012, nothing. The updates stopped coming.
Now we have seven years’ worth of official twin name data from the U.S. government…and that’s it.
I used to keep these rankings in my directory, but they are so out-of-date now that I think it’s best to archive them in a single blog post, for easy reference. So, without further ado, here are the top baby names for twins born in the United States from 2005 to 2011 (in reverse order):

Observations on the 2009 rankings:
#9 and #44 on the girl-girl list are “Mackenzie, Madison” and “Madison, Mckenzie.”
#15 and #23 on the girl-girl list are both “Gabriella, Isabella.” There was probably supposed to be a spelling difference somewhere, but the SSA had the pairings listed identically.
#8, #9 and #34 on the girl-boy list are “Jayda, Jayden,” “Jada, Jaden” and “Jada, Jayden.”
#10 on the girl-boy list is “Aidan, Nadia” — the only pair of anagram names I’ve spotted on these twin lists (besides Heaven/Nevaeh, of course).
#26 and #27 on the girl-boy list are “Zachary, Zoe” and “Zachary, Zoey.”

A number of baby names (e.g., Maci, Bentley, Catelynn, Jenelle, Aubree, Aliannah, Aleeah) have been given a boost by MTV’s many shows about unplanned teen pregnancy (e.g. 16 & Pregnant, Teen Mom, Teen Mom 2).
This makes me think that MTV’s Dev, which premieres in a few days, might influence the baby name charts as well.
Dev follows 22-year-old singer Dev during the latter portion of her unplanned, high-risk pregnancy (the baby has gastroschisis). The baby girl, Emilia Lovely, was born in December of 2011.
If the show finds an audience, be on the lookout for a Dev debut and a popularity boost for Lovely. (The name Emilia is on its way up already.)
Dev’s real name is Devin Star Tailes, btw. She has sisters named Sierra Sol and Maezee Luna.
