In Idaho’s 2003-2009 annual reports, the heading of the unique names section was “Selected Unique Names, Yewneek Spellings.” For 2010, it was lengthened to “Selected Unique Baby Names, Yewneek Baybee Spellings.” Aren’t these a bit snarky for an official state document…?

Thank you, thank you, thank you for blogging this. It is so very, very, very awesome.
These are great! I love names from the bottom of lists — favorites here are Goldie-Moon, Eleven (I really like Elleve, the Danish word for eleven),Tlaloc & Tucson.
I love:
Bear, Dagger, Genghis, Hatchet, Nightsky
For the girls, I like: Aoife, Dawnlight, Hickory,Sparkle, Sunset, Virtue. Of course most of these are gps.
I think the biggest surprise is 65 Brooklyns in Idaho. Don’t they purport to hate New York City?
I wonder if Dawnlight and Nightsky are twins? Nature names do seem quite popular, if varied.
I’m most intrigued by Grimsley, personally. Sounds quite mature/macabre for a baby…which is perhaps why I like it. :)
I wonder too about Dawnlight and Nightsky. Can’t find anything online about either one, though.
I think the uber nature names might have something to do with Idaho’s high Native American population. I noticed that Native Americans do occassionally give their kids names like Moondance (I knew an NA girl by this name), Nightsky, Bear, Dawnlight. I love those types of names.
I agree Grimsley is intriguing.
Being from Idaho and especially rural Idaho, i can tell you for a fact these names have nothing to do with the Native American population who do not tend to name their children ridiculously misspelled ‘nature’ names.
