I’ve been keeping my eye on Asher lately. I think there’s a good chance this name will crack the U.S. top 100 soon — possibly even on the upcoming 2007 list. Why? A few reasons…
- It’s got a promising trajectory:
- 2006 – 252nd
- 2005 – 288th
- 2004 – 335th
- 2003 – 411th
- 2002 – 483rd
- 2001 – 529th
- 2000 – 579th
- 1999 – 601st
- 1998 – 686th
- 1997 – 728th
- It’s got a great definition. It was derived from a Hebrew word meaning “happy” or “blessing.”
- Other “Ash-” names (e.g., Ashley, Ashton, Ashlyn) are currently popular.
- It’s Biblical, which is a big plus for many people.
- It seems to be everywhere lately. I know several babies with the name, and I’ve heard about many more (via parents who write to me).
What do you think, is Asher up-and-coming? Do you think it’s a good name?
