How Many Babies Were Named After Fonzie?

fonzieI posted about Joanie and Chachi yesterday, so I’d be remiss if I didn’t say a few words about Fonzie today.

Now, babies were getting the name Fonzie long before Happy Days. Long before television, in fact. But the names of these early Fonzies were all likely based on Alfonso, not on Fonzarelli.

Popular character Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli, played by actor Henry Winkler, started appearing on TV when Happy Days debuted in 1974.

A year later, the baby name Fonzie — which had been absent from the SSA’s baby name lists for four decades — experienced a brief revival:

  • 1978: unlisted
  • 1977: 8 baby boys named Fonzie
  • 1976: 6 baby boys named Fonzie
  • 1975: 9 baby boys named Fonzie
  • 1974: unlisted

That’s a grand total of 23 Fonz-inspired Fonzies.

What do you think of the name Fonzie?

(And, the Happy Days opening theme song is far better than yesterday’s theme song, don’t you think?)

Joanie Loves Chachi – The Show Is Gone, But the Names Live On

Joanie Loves Chachi
Chachi & Joanie
The TV show Joanie Loves Chachi (1982-1983) was a Happy Days spin-off that focused on the characters Joanie Cunningham (sister of Richie) and Charles “Chachi” Arcola (cousin of Fonzie).

Joanie Loves Chachi didn’t last long, but it did make an impact on expectant parents.

In 1982, the baby name Chachi showed up on the SSA’s baby name list for the first and only time:

  • 1983: unlisted
  • 1982: 9 baby boys named Chachi [debut]
  • 1981: unlisted

And the baby name Joanie was boosted back into the top 1,000:

  • 1983: Joanie ranked 1,080th
  • 1982: Joanie ranked 879th
  • 1981: Joanie ranked 1,074th

Later that year, though, ABC’s Joanie Loves Chachi got destroyed (ratings-wise) by NBC’s The A-Team. Chachi never appeared on the charts again, and Joanie went downhill until it fell off the SSA’s list entirely (i.e. was given to fewer than five baby girls) in 2008.

P.S. Here’s the cheesy Joanie Loves Chachi opening theme song. Don’t say I didn’t warn you…

Update (2/26/15) – Just spotted Chachi-variant Shashi, which was a one-hit the same year.
