Baby born during Hurricane Alicia, named Alicia

On the night of August 17, 1983, a baby girl was born — 12 days overdue — to Rachelle and Kenneth Sanders of Galveston, Texas.

Mrs. Sanders said the couple had already picked out a name for their infant if she were a girl. “But then I thought, ‘Why would she wait until there was a hurricane?’ I didn’t think I would go into labor then, and the nurses suggested naming her after the hurricane.'”

Hurricane Alicia made landfall near Galveston just a few hours after baby Alicia was born.
