Baby name battle: Ava vs. Eve

The palindromic names Ava and Eve are similar, and there’s a reason for that: They’re related!

Ava is a form of Eve. Eve, in turn, is a transliteration of the Biblical name Chava (or Chavah), which is a form of the Hebrew word chayah, meaning “to live” or “living.”

If you were having a daughter, and you had to name her either Ava or Eve, which would it be? Why?

  1. Definitely Eve. I’ve always liked its simplicity.

Plus, to me Ava is pronounced AH-vah, and I know that virtually no one else would pronounce it that way [also, Eva is AY-vah and Iva is EE-vah].

  2. I think I would go for Ava. At one point it time, I was going by the name of Eve (can’t for the life of me remember why!) around friends and it would just be a bit strange to me. Maybe if it was short for Evangeline… but between Ava and Eve, it would probably be Ava.

  3. Ava, since…well…it’s my name. I like it. And I was born before it became so “trendy”, so it doesn’t feel that way to me.
