Be on the lookout for Arrietty in 2012

The Secret World of Arrietty isn’t a new movie. It was released in Japan in mid-2010, France in early 2011, the UK in mid-2011, Australia in late 2011…and finally, this week, it’s coming to the U.S. and Canada.

If the movie does well, I think we’ll see a few baby girls named Arrietty this year.

The movie is based on a children’s book called The Borrowers (1952) by Mary Norton. The story features a family of very small people who “borrow” things from regular-sized humans to survive. The family consists of father Pod, mother Homily, and 14-year-old daughter Arrietty.

I’m not sure how Mary Norton pronounced the name, but I’m hearing it as “ayr-ee-ET-tee” in the movie trailer.

Do you like the name Arrietty? How many (if any) babies will be named Arrietty in the U.S. in 2012, do you think?

  1. I remember reading the books when I was a kid, although I didn’t remember the names. Wasn’t there a previous movie version?

  2. I really love the name Arrietty !
since i seen the move i’ve loved it
and i’ve wanted to name my baby Arrietty if it’s a girl so badly.
but me and my fella seem to bump heads with the name.. but im fighting him on it haha cause i simply adore it.. an hope he can keep an open mind to it an learn to see the uniqueness and beauty in the name.

if it’s a boy though, it’d be Noah. But a girls name isn’t as easy :(

  3. I love the name! We watched the movies recently, the cartoon one in question as well as the none cartoon one with JOhn Goodman. Very good movies! i would name my girl Arrietty for sure : )
