The French name Thylane debuted in the U.S. baby name data just recently, in 2017:
- 2019: unlisted
- 2018: unlisted
- 2017: 5 baby girls named Thylane [debut]
- 2016: unlisted
- 2015: unlisted
I think the reason must be the rising visibility of French model Thylane Blondeau (b. 2001), who is followed by over 3 million people on Instagram.
Her first name is pronounced tee-lahn in French (you can hear it in this video, and also in this one). But Thylane herself (in this video) suggests that other pronunciations (like tee-layn or ty-layn) might be easier for those who don’t speak French.
What are your thoughts on this name?
When i first saw it, I puzzled out, TEE-lah-neigh. But that is more Scan/Germanic. As I read the article and then saw TEE-lahn, it made sense. I love it, i wish Americans had more variety in the pronunciation of letters.
For example, I have an aunt Irene. Never cared much for the name. Then when I lived in Norway I had a very young cousin name Irene, pronounced- Ear (trill the R) en-neh with the lilt in the beginning.
Teallahn might make it easier to pronounce in American English.
I wish i could hear the videos but my video card is not playing nice with others LOL
Fantasy names- Tieliele (F), Tielyanna(F), Tealandir (M),Tielan (M) perfect for quads. YAY! LOL thank you again!!!
Oh, I really like that Norwegian pronunciation of Irene!
