Baby born to cricket player, named after cricket ground

Cricket player Brian Lara
Brian Lara

In January of 1993, famous West Indies cricketer Brian Lara — one of the best batters of his generation — scored 277 against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

It was Lara’s first Test century — that is, the first time he scored 100 or more runs in a single inning of Test cricket.

The feat was so meaningful to Lara that, three years later, when he and his partner Leasel Rovedas welcomed their first child, a baby girl, they decided to name her Sydney after the SCG.

(The couple’s second child, another baby girl, was born in 2010 and named Tyla.)
