Where did it come from?
Actor Esai (pronounced ee-sie) Morales, who was one of the stars of the 1987 movie La Bamba.
The movie was a biopic of rock and roll pioneer Richard Valenzuela, popularly known as Ritchie Valens (played by Lou Diamond Phillips). Esai played Ritchie’s brash older brother, Bob Morales. (The characters had different fathers, which accounts for the different surnames.)
Esai Morales, born in New York and of Puerto Rican descent, inherited his first name from his own father. The name is thought to be based on Esaias, which is a form of the Biblical name Isaiah (meaning “Yahweh is salvation” in Hebrew).
Interestingly, the character’s surname being “Morales” like his own was a factor in Esai’s decision to take the part. At the time, he was trying to choose between the role in La Bamba and a role in the Steven Spielberg movie Batteries Not Included, which he assumed would be an “instant hit.”
And I just thought to myself, there’s the commercial-looking success thing, but then there’s this thing that tugs at my heart. It made me cry. I read the story and, like, I had tears streaming down my face. […] And I saw a character with my name on it. Literally, it had my name on it. You don’t see great roles oftentime with Latino names, much less your own. You know, so I was like, you know, I’m gonna roll the dice with this one. And I think I made the right decision.

NYC typically waits until the following December to release their baby name rankings, so I don’t expect the 2020 rankings to be available until the end of this year.
The English word paladin — borrowed from French in the late 1500s — originally referred to one of the twelve legendary knights in Charlemagne’s court. The definition later evolved to encompass any knight known for being particularly heroic or chivalrous.
The word also happens to refer to a handful of people who are not knights at all. How? It’s their legal name! Paladin started popping up in the U.S. baby name data in the late 1950s:

The pop culture influence wasn’t a knight, though. It was a gunfighter. A gentleman gunfighter.
Paladin, played by actor Richard Boone, was the mononymous protagonist of the TV Western Have Gun – Will Travel, which aired from 1957 to 1963. (The series was also adapted into a radio show, several novels, and a line of comic books.)
Gun-for-hire Paladin was a West Point grad who lived in a San Francisco hotel, smoked expensive cigars, had box seats at the opera house, and spoke Chinese. Cleverly, he used a knight chess piece as his personal symbol: a silver one adorned his holster, and another was printed on his business card. (Yes, he had business cards.)
The name Paladin dropped off the charts after 1958, but has since returned several times in the new millennium (perhaps thanks to role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons).
The rare name Rolayne has appeared in the U.S. baby name data a total of four times — all in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Usage was particularly high in Utah:

Where did the name come from?
RoLayne Rasmussen, the University of Utah homecoming queen who married well-known University of Utah basketball player Arnie Ferrin in June of 1948.
Arnie was born Chariton Arnold Ferrin, Jr. (The name Chariton is based on the ancient Greek word charis, meaning “grace, kindness.”) He was a four-time All-American during college, and after graduating in 1948 he played for the Minneapolis Lakers from 1948 to 1951. He helped the Lakers win the BAA championship in 1949 and the NBA championship in 1950.
And as Arnie made headlines, RoLayne was often mentioned in the articles as well. As were their children, as they came along. (They had four: Arnold III, Richard Bard, Louanne, and Shawn.)
RoLayne was one of several baby names to be influenced by the partner of a high-profile person. Names similarly influenced include Perian, Stedman, and Josanne.
