A man named Young Boozer — in full, Young Jacob Boozer III — is currently running for Alabama State Treasurer.
In one campaign video, he starts by saying, “I’m Young Boozer, and, yes, that’s my real name.”
On his campaign website he tells the story behind his name:
I was named after my father who first made his name as a football star for the University of Alabama. My father was named after his father who served as Mayor of Samson, Alabama.
His father, Young Boozer, Jr., had been “an outstanding football and baseball player at the University of Alabama” in the mid-1930s. He was also roommates with Paul “Bear” Bryant.
His grandfather, the original Young Boozer, had been given his mother’s maiden name as a first name.
Will Young Boozer III’s name help him or hurt him in the election, do you think?
