The curious name Apasra first popped up in the U.S. baby name data in 1965:

  • 1967: unlisted
  • 1966: unlisted
  • 1965: 5 baby girls named Apasra [debut]
  • 1964: unlisted
  • 1963: unlisted

The next year it dropped back out of the data, though, and it’s absent ever since, making Apasra a one-hit wonder.

Where did it come from?

The 1965 Miss Universe pageant.

The winner of the pageant in July of that year was a young woman named Apasra Hongsakula from Bangkok, Thailand.

Apasra was the first Thai woman and the second Asian woman (after Akiko Kojima of Japan) to be named Miss Universe.
