What gave the baby name Etan a boost?

Etan Patz has been in the news lately. He’s the 6-year-old New York City boy who went missing in on May 25, 1979, while walking to the bus stop. The nation — especially New York — was shocked by his disappearance.

Even before cases of missing children routinely garnered national media attention, Etan’s case quickly received a lot of coverage. His father, a professional photographer, disseminated black-and-white photographs of Etan in an effort to find him. The massive search and media attention that followed focused the nation’s attention on the problem of child abduction and lack of plans to address it.

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan declared May 25th National Missing Children’s Day.

In the years following the incident, usage of the name Etan (a form of Ethan) increased slightly, both nationally and in New York specifically:

In Idaho’s 2003-2009 annual reports, the heading of the unique names section was “Selected Unique Names, Yewneek Spellings.” For 2010, it was lengthened to “Selected Unique Baby Names, Yewneek Baybee Spellings.” Aren’t these a bit snarky for an official state document…?

How do you pronounce Gotye?

Belgian-Australian musician Gotye (pronounced go-tee-yay) has been making headlines lately thanks to the single “Somebody That I Used To Know,” which became a Billboard #1 hit just a few days ago.

So…what’s up with that name?

The name Gotye is an anglicized form of the French name Gaultier (also spelled Gauthier and Gautier).

Gotye was born Wouter De Backer in Belgium. He started going by Walter, the English version of Wouter, when his family moved to Australia. And his mother’s pet name for him, Gaultier, is yet another version the name.

He decided to use Gaultier as his stage name, but instead of using a French spelling, he chose to render it Gotye. (This is similar to the way Irish singers/sisters Enya and Moya Brennan anglicized their names from Eithne and Máire.)

What turned Fame into a baby name in 1981?

The movie Fame, released In May of 1980, followed a group of teenagers attending a performing arts high school in New York City.

The movie was a success, but its theme song was even more of a success.

“Fame” the song — performed by one of the film’s young stars, Irene Cara (who played Coco Hernandez) — reached #1 on Billboard‘s Disco Action chart in August and #4 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart in September. It even ended up winning the Oscar for Best Original Song.

And in 1981, for the first and only time, the unlikely name Fame made an appearance in the U.S. baby name data:

  • 1981: 7 baby girls named Fame [debut]
  • 1980: unlisted
  • 1979: unlisted

(In the song, Cara sings the lyrics “remember my name” multiple times…could this line have acted as a subtle name-prompt to listeners?)

Neither Fame the TV show (1982-1987) nor Fame the movie remake (2009) managed to revive the baby name Fame after 1981.
