  1. This is the least trendy current list I’ve seen. I guess Austrians don’t go in for fashion much and mostly stick to reliable saints’ names.

  2. I think it has a lot to do with the country’s baby name laws/guidelines, which seem fairly restrictive.

    The Austrian newspaper Kurier ran an article about the types of names that are off-limits in Austria a few months ago. Here’s a bit of it (translated into English, thanks to Google):

    However, too much creativity in naming can be problematic. Because not all first names are allowed in Austria. There is a name book in every registry office. The names listed there are based on the well-being of the children.

    First names must not be ridiculous or offensive. Basically, the name must provide information about the gender of the child. In addition, names should be common. But it’s one of those things when it comes to usage. As proof of this, personal and even internet research are also permissible. At the same time, the children’s names should be rooted in reality. Fantasy figures therefore tend not to go through. 

    In Austria, car brands, cities and heroes from comic series are taboo as first names.
