What turned Silk into a baby name in 1993?

Silk's album "Lose Control" (1992)
Silk album

The word Silk has appeared just once so far in the U.S. baby name data, in 1993:

  • 1995: unlisted
  • 1994: unlisted
  • 1993: 8 baby girls named Silk [debut]
  • 1992: unlisted
  • 1991: unlisted

Where did it come from?

Music. Specifically, the Atlanta-based group Silk (one of the many “sexually suggestive R&B vocal groups that followed Jodeci“).

Silk’s biggest hit, the slow jam “Freak Me,” was the #1 song on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart for two weeks in May of 1993. Two other Silk songs, “Girl U For Me” and “Happy Days,” also reached the Hot 100 that year, peaking at 26th and 86th respectively.

Silk was the first band signed to Keith Sweat’s record label Keia, which was founded in late 1992. The label was presumably named after Sweat’s daughter, Keia, who was born the same year. (The baby name Keia saw peak usage in 1993, but this probably has more to do with a TV commercial featuring a girl named Kia than with Keith Sweat’s daughter, or label.)

The word “silk” can be traced back to the ancient Greek word serikos, which referred to the Seres people of Asia. The Seres supplied the ancient Greeks with silks via the Silk Road.

Kids named for cars: Porsche, Mercedes, Alfa

Last month, Joy Lowther of Norfolk, England, went into labor while shopping in a local supermarket. Ten minutes later, she gave birth to a baby girl.

She and her boyfriend decided to name the baby Porsche, as one of their older children is called Mercedes. The other two are Frank* and Alfie — who’s now called Alfa, says Joy, “because the girls are named after cars.”

Joy plans to have one more baby. If it’s a boy, he’ll be called Bentley (a name that’s very trendy in the U.S. right now thanks to reality TV).

Joy didn’t mention what she’d name another baby girl, but I know of a Porsche in Texas who has sisters named Audi and Lexus, so there are two ideas. Another possibility is Cressida, which might be picking up steam soon. Other car names that have been used as girl names include Camry, Jetta, Miata and Kia.

*Poor Frank. He’s the only sibling without a car name. On that note, here’s a question for you: If you had a bunch of siblings (4+) and all but one of you had a name that fit a pattern, would you want one of the “in” names, or would you rather be the odd one out?

Baby born outside of pub, named after pub

Two months ago, Lisa Barnaby of Hertfordshire, England, gave birth to a baby girl outside of a pub.

She and her husband Gavin had been trying to reach to the hospital, but got stuck in traffic. So they pulled off the road, parked at a pub called The Bell, and called an ambulance instead.

The baby didn’t want to wait for a ride to the hospital, though — she ended up being delivered by paramedics in the back seat of Lisa and Gavin’s Vauxhall Zafira, still parked outside the pub.

What did the couple name their new baby girl? Bella, after The Bell.

Mr Barnaby said naming their new baby after the pub was a good way of capturing Bella’s birth.

He said: “It will always be a reminder of that magical night.”

I wonder if the name Zafira was ever a contender…

Baby born in Kia Carens, named Kia

Samantha Smyth didn’t make it to Poole Hospital in Dorset, England, in time for the birth of her daughter. She ended up giving birth in the back seat of her mother’s Kia Carens in the wee hours of November 15, 2009.

The baby girl, who was going to be called Tilly, was named Kia in honor of her unusual birthplace. Samantha noted:

I don’t think we would have used Volkswagen or Citroen.

Several days after Kia’s birth, Kia Motors generously gave the young family a Kia Carens of their very own.
