More Popular Twin Names!

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve put up five more lists of twin names: 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006 and 2005.

The 2009 list, like the 2010 and 2011 lists, is split up into gender-specific sub-lists (girl-girl twins, boy-boy twins, girl-boy twins). The SSA didn’t split up any of the earlier lists.

Here’s a quick rundown of the most popular twin names, year by year:

As far as I know, the SSA hasn’t published any earlier or later lists of popular twin names, so this is all of the official twin name data we’ve got.

  1. This makes sense. Twins with matchy-matchy names are likely to converge around timeless classics, or around whatever names are trendy that year, so they’ll top the charts for twin names.

But twins without matchy-matchy names (maybe names that sound like a ‘sib-set’ but don’t necessarily sound like twins) are all over the place. I’d love to see some kind of analysis on what percentage of twins are given names that are/aren’t matchy-matchy.
