The most gender-neutral baby names in the U.S. in 2023

In 2023, more than 2,700 names appeared in the U.S. baby name data both as girl names and as boy names.

Which of these names were the most gender-neutral overall?

To create a useful set of rankings, I (first) excluded any name not given to at least 150 babies in total, then (second) sorted the remaining names by how evenly they were given to babies of each gender.

I did experiment with other cut-off points (e.g., 50 babies, 100 babies, 200 babies), but I thought 150 offered the best result — an interesting mix of names, backed up by numbers high enough to be meaningful.

Nearly all of the (more than seventy) baby names that were even fifty-fifty splits last year were bestowed just a handful of times.

Popular and unique baby names in Quebec (Canada), 2022

Of the thirteen provinces and territories of Canada, Quebec is the second-largest both in terms of population (after Ontario) and in terms of area (after Nunavut).

Last year, Quebec welcomed 80,700 babies. The most popular names among these babies? Emma and Noah.

Some possible explanations/associations for a few of the above:

  • Arsaniq means “northern lights” in Inuktitut.
  • Glauca might be a reference to white spruce (Picea glauca), a type of tree found throughout Canada.
  • Napessis is based on napesis, the Cree word for “small boy.”
  • Qullik (like Qulliq in the 2021 data) refers to an Inuit soapstone lamp.
  • Qumanguaq (which was also used in 2020) refers to a mountain in Nunavut.
  • Sirpaluk refers to “one of the seal knucklebones used in an Inuit game.”
  • Uashtuashkuan means “northern lights” in Innu (which is related to Cree).
  • Waastuskun means “northern lights” in Cree.
  • Wakinyan means “thunder” in Lakota.
  • Zotique can be traced back to the ancient Greek word zotikos, meaning “full of life, alive.”

Joanassie and Paulasie (which were mentioned in the post about Canada’s 2021 rankings) are two examples of Inuktitut-influenced Christian names.

And one last name I wanted to throw in was Minokimin, which was part of a longer boy name bestowed in Quebec last year. Minokimin refers to one of the eight Algonquin seasons — specifically, to the period in late spring during which ice thaws and plants begin to grow.

Canada has released national baby name rankings, everyone!

After years of making due with rankings for individual Canadian provinces and territories, we now have data that covers the entire country.

Ironically, Canada announced its new baby name rankings just a few of months after I attempted (out of frustration) to use the regional lists to make an educated guess about Canada’s top 5 overall. How funny.

So let’s not put it off any longer — here are Canada’s top 50 girl names and top 50 boy names of 2021:

The girls’ top 100 included Everly (55th), Romy (tied for 65th), Paisley (86th), and Lennon (tied for 94th).

The boys’ top 100 included Asher (54th), Emile (60th), Arnaud (tied for 89th), and Alexis (94th).

One name, Charlie, reached the top 100 for both genders. It ranked 17th for girls and 71st (tied with Matteo) for boys.

So where can you see these long-awaited Canadian baby name rankings for yourself?

Over at Statistics Canada. They’ve published rankings going back to 1991, and — just like the U.S. SSA — they’ve included all names given to at least five babies, of one gender or the other, per year.

Though we regularly see rare indigenous-language names (such as Anangokaa, Timmiak, and Waseskwan) being used in Alberta and Quebec, the only one used often enough in the last three decades to reach that 5-baby threshold nationally was Lucassie, an Inuktitut name given to exactly 5 baby boys in 2007.

(Lucassie is based on the biblical name Luke. Other “Inuktitutized” Christian names include Issacie, Joanasie/Joanassee, Josephie, Markoosie, Pauloosie/Paulassie, Peterosee, Simeonie, and Thomasee. A female example is Elisapie/Elisapee.)

Which unisex baby names were the most popular in 2022?

To figure this out, I did two things. First, I identified all the gender-neutral names in the latest batch of U.S. baby name data. (To qualify as gender-neutral, a name must be given to girls at least one-third of the time and to boys at least one-third of the time.) Second, I sorted those hundreds of gender-neutral names by total usage: male plus female.

The following names came out on top:

The first four names — Parker, River, Charlie, and Blake — were also the top four in 2021.

The five names that entered the top 20 were Shiloh, Salem, Legacy, Skyler, and Denver. Four of the five qualified as unisex in 2021, but ranked lower on the list. Legacy, on the other hand, was slightly over two-thirds male in 2021.

The five names that dropped out of the top 20 were Hayden, Amari, Oakley, Reign, and Milan. All five failed to qualify as unisex in 2022. Hayden, Amari and Milan were given to too many boys; Oakley and Reign were given to too many girls.
