Baby names needed: Boy and girl names for fraternal twins

A reader named Abby is expecting fraternal twins, a boy and a girl, in October. She and her husband already have a son named Leo Sebastian.

They’re aiming for vintage names (with kind of a quirky/British feel) that aren’t too popular. These are their favorites so far, top picks in italics.

 Boy NamesGirl Names
Her Picks:Edward (Teddy)
Henry
Jasper
Jude
Maxwell (Max)
Oliver
Alice
Elsa (Elsie)
Ivy
Juliet
Violet
His Picks:August (Auggie/Gus)
Dashiell (Dash)
Beatrix
Felicity
Matilda
Penelope (Nellie)
Ramona

Abby says, “He thinks mine are slightly boring, I think his are a tad too flamboyant.”

They’d like our opinions on two things:

  1. What other boy and girl names would we suggest?
  2. Out of the current favorites, what are the best pairings?

The twins’ surname will be similar to Waters.

Here are my thoughts…

1. First, name suggestions. Most of these names have a vintage feel, and none of are currently in the top 100 (though several are heading that way).

I didn’t include any w-names, but I was tempted to throw in Willa and Winifred (Winnie). Maybe even Wilhelmina (Minnie).

2. Out of the current favorites, Henry and Penelope are the two I like best for twins. I also like Maxwell and Beatrix (because both have that quirky x).

What other names/pairings would you suggest to Abby?

  1. For boys, I’d throw in Liam, Miles, Nigel, and Gavin. For girls, since he seems to like longer names, maybe Alicia, Alison, Elyse, Elisa, or Julietta to expand her names. New ones: Cordelia, Marina, Rosemary, Rosalyn, or Phoebe.

I have a friend who’s twins are Beatrice (Bea) and Theodore (Teddy), with a younger sister Matilda.

Other than August with Alice or Jude with Juliet, I think most of the pairings work. I kind of like Max and Matilda together even though I’m not found of matching twin names.

  2. From their list,
Leo, Jude, and Ramona make a great sib-set.
But I think Jasper, August, Juliet, Beatrix, and Penelope are the best middle ground names between conservative and adventurous. And actually, I think there’s not that much gap between their lists.

From Nancy’s list, I think Calvin, Felix, Oscar, Roman, and Tobias, Eugenia, Flora, and Millicent strike the right note.
Leo, Tobias, and Millicent (Leo, Toby, and Milly … LOVE)
    Leo, Roman, and Flora

    How about …. ?
    Blaise, Percy, Clement,
Phoebe, Calla, Gwendolyn, Evangeline, Angelica, Agnes? Ha – I almost suggested Abby!

    Good luck, congratulations!

  3. I really like the names they’ve alreadythought of, so I don’t have any alternatives. I just want to say that I love the combination of Augustus Edward and Elsa Penelope. Makes me think of a German-English mix! Though, I would like to say, I think Teddy would make a marvelous nickname for an Augustus, as well.

  4. Although Ivy is not my favorite name I think it would be cute for all the children to match. Since Leo is 3 letters and Sebastian 3 syllables, they should go with Ivy Beatrice/ Ivy Matilda or a combination such as that. The boy should be Max Oliver/ Max Tobias

  5. I would do something like Kevin & Linda, Carlisle & Laura, or Leroy & Rhiannon. Good Luck!

  6. I just found this site, and have read many stories. I have five daughters and two sons and my fourth daughter is currently pregnant, due in Feb. She has a daughter who’s 4 named Kadynce Lane. This baby is a boy, and she’s considering K first names. Last name ends in ck.
    Any ideas welcome….:)

Of the list of names for these babies long since named, I chose Beatrix Juliet and Maxwell August. Love them both. Does anyone know what these little twins were actually named??
