Here are the boy names that debuted the highest on the SSA’s 2011 baby name list:

  1. Jionni, 62 baby boys
  2. Itzae, 29
  3. Crixus, 15
  4. Maurkice, 13
  5. Braxson, 12
  6. Edahi, 12
  7. Noahjames, 12
  8. Huxton, 11
  9. Jonuel, 11 (false positive)
  10. Maksimus, 11
  11. Paisley, 11
  12. Vadir, 11
  13. Yeiren, 11
  14. Aazim, 10
  15. Axiel, 10
  16. Bentli, 10
  17. Finch, 10
  18. Jayco, 10
  19. Jermir, 10
  20. Kastle, 10

Some likely explanations:

  • Jionni is from Jionni LaValle, fiance of Jersey Shore “guidette” Snooki. He’s also the father of her unborn baby.
  • Crixus is from Crixus, a character on the TV show Spartacus. (The name of Crixus’s long lost love, Naevia, also debuted in 2011 with 11 baby girls.)
  • Maurkice is from Maurkice Pouncey, a professional football player with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
  • Vadir is a variant of Vadhir, last year’s top debut.
  • Bentli is a variant of Bentley, which is currently quite trendy.

Can you come up with explanations for any of the others?

  1. I don’t know why they spelled it with a K, but I’m guessing Kastle is from the TV series on ABC. (There were 17 boys named Castle as well, but that name debuted in 2010.)

Maybe Finch is just the natural progression from Scout and Atticus??

  2. Julie, I think that’s an interesting theory about Finch.

The numbers for both Atticus & Scout continue to rise, so it does seem natural some parents would want something even more “unique” from the book.

Not seeing any babies named Boo yet, but maybe that’s next…? :)
