Dastan was Jake Gyllenhaal character in the Prince of Persia. It’s a terrible film, but the name fits the trends, so I’m not surprised some parents used it.
I suppose Pistol makes sense in a world where Gunner, Colt and Cannon are widespread names.
Lastly, Goodluck Jonathan is the new president of Nigeria.
I had to chuckle at Khloe. Those Kardashians do know how to spread a name!
I’m going to guess…
– Koli came from the Season 9 contestant on The Biggest Loser (which aired January-May 2010)
– Riaan might come from Riaan Viljoen (rugby player) or Riaan Manser (cyclist), both of whom entered the news in 2009.
– Robben came from Arjen Robben (Dutch soccer player — thanks to my boyfriend for knowing that one)
I’m looking everywhere and I can’t find the extended list! Nancy, I hope you post it soon, it’s easier to search your site for specific names anyways!
Hi Jen,
I’ll add the names to the site as soon as I can, though it’ll probably take a few days (at least!).
In the meanwhile, you can download the files from the SSA directly, if you want:
http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/limits.html
Just click “single file” (end of 2nd paragraph) to start downloading the zip file.
Thanks! I downloaded last year’s before but couldn’t find it this year. :)
Baze, Bayze, Baize — might be inspired by the nickname of the dad character on the recently-canceled CW show Life Unexpected, whose actual name was Nate Bazel.
Arson — yikes! I know bad boy names are big, but…
Xzayden — just when I thought we’d plumbed the depths of the rhymes-with-Aidens.
Awesome — Amazing can’t be far behind.
@Claire – Amazing is already here! :) Not on the boys’ list, though. It debuted on the girls’ list in 2003, and last year was given to 6 baby girls.
I bet Yadon is pronounced Jaden. I know a Yadyn (Jadyn).
Just a hunch, but Breaker is of one of 7 children on the reality show “9 by Design,” about his parents, who are interior decorators in Manhattan. Siblings’ names are Wolfgang, Tallulah, Bellamy (a girl), Five (the fifth child), Holleder, and Major.
@Alex – I bet that’s it. Thanks!
Seeing Child made me wonder – has “Boy” ever been listed as a male name on the rankings – as in Tarzan?
@Chelsea – Yup, “Boy” has been listed before. A few may have been genuine, but I bet some/most were placeholders for unnamed babies. (Other placeholders include Girl, Babyboy, Babygirl, Unnamed, Unknown.)
