It’s time for the annual Pop Culture Baby Name Game!

This year we’re kicking things off January 8th, the birthday of Elvis Presley! (He was born in 1935 and would have been 83 today.)

So how do you play the game? Just brainstorm for baby names that could have gotten a boost in usage in 2017 thanks to the influence popular culture: movies, music, television, social media, video games, sports, politics, products, trends, and so forth.

Have any additions to make? Comment below! Just don’t forget to mention the pop culture influence.

The SSA will release the next batch of baby name data in May, so I will post the results to the game a few days after that 2017 data becomes available.

If you don’t want to miss the results post, please subscribe to NBN by entering your email address into the “Get New Posts via Email” form in the sidebar.

P.S. Have some ideas for 2018? Comment with those too — I’ll add them to next year’s game. One addition I just made: Grayson, for the winter storm. (Here’s a Massachusetts baby named Grayson, and a Maine baby possibly named Grayson.)

  1. All the suggestions I can think of right now are from movies:
    -Logan, from the movie Logan.
-Thor and Loki, from Thor: Ragnarok
-Wiseau, from The Disaster Artist (2018) and The Room (2003). Yeah, D.A. came out pretty late in the year, but the hype was insane.
-Tommy, also from the Disaster Artist and The Room.
-Winston, from Darkest Hour. The potential boost might not hit until 2018, though. That said, also look out for a reappearance of the name Churchill.
-Gareth, as in Gareth Edwards (director of Rogue One)

I think Harvey’s getting the exact opposite of a boost – not just from the hurricane, but Hollywood too.

  2. Alessia (signer, Grammy nominee for best new artist)
    Ivanka
Maisel (from The Marvelous Mrs Maisel)
Midge (from The Marvelous Mrs Maisel)
    Ned (from Spiderman-Homecoming)
    Renata (from Big Little Lies)
Solana (actual first name of sing SZA)

  3. Trump (president)
    Baron (president’s son)
    Ivanka (president’s daughter)
    Pence (Vice-President)
    Topaz (Thor: Ragnorak)
    Zari (Legends of Tomorrow)
    Amaya (Legends of Tomorrow)
    Tala (actress Tala Ashe)
    Gypsy (Flash)
    J’onn (Supergirl)
    Merlyn (Arrow)
    Ladybird (Lady Bird)
Poe (Star Wars – The Last Jedi)
    Via (Wonder)
    Themyscira (Wonder Woman)
    Moxie (YA book)
Strummer (child of actress Julia Stiles)
Revel (child of actor Matthew Morrison)
Lyric (child of musician AJ McLean

  4. Guessing some of these won’t hit the charts til 2018, but here are my guesses.

    Dream (Kardashian baby)
    Jones (Tony Romo’s baby)
    Chosen (Cam Newton’s baby)
    Brennley (America’s Got Talent competitor)
    Eniko (Kevin Hart’s wife)
    Sire (50 Cent’s son, not a newborn)
Lux (Kail from Teen Mom’s baby boy)
    Kamaiyah (rapper)
Julien (for a girl, after musician Julien Baker)
