How did “The Real World” influence baby names?

Title of the TV series "The Real World" (1992-2019)
“This is the true story…of seven strangers…picked to live in a loft…and have their lives taped…”

Several months ago, the cast of the inaugural season of MTV’s The Real World held a 6-day reunion in the very same NYC loft they shared back in 1992. The reunion — which was filmed, of course — is now airing as a series on the Paramount+ platform. (Here’s the trailer.)

When I was a teenager, I loved watching The Real World. (And I appreciated that the names of the cast members were always prominently displayed in the opening credits!) So I think now would be a great time to go back and see if any Real World cast member names had an influence on U.S. baby names.

The names in boldface line up with a discernible increase in baby name usage. (Other Real World names may have affected baby names as well, but it can be hard to tell when, say, a name is already common, or already on the rise.)

Here are details on all the boldfaced names, plus two more influential RW names (from seasons 6 and 18) that didn’t even belong to primary cast members.

  • The name Kellyanne (19; 2007-8) returned to the data in 2008.
  • The name Baya (21; 2009) saw sharply increased usage in 2009. In fact, Baya was one of the fastest-rising baby names of 2009.

  • The name Kassius (32; 2016-17) saw increased usage in 2017.

Celebrity baby name: Neve Te Aroha

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern
Jacinda Ardern

In June of 2018, Jacinda Ardern, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, and her partner Clarke Gayford welcomed a baby girl.

The baby’s name? Neve Te Aroha (pronounced NEEV tay-AH-roh-hah).

Ardern said:

[W]e chose Neve because we just liked it, and when we met her we thought she looked like she suited the name. Also, it means — in various forms — it means bright and radiant, and snow which seemed like a good combination for Matariki [the Maori New Year] and for solstice.

Neve is an Anglicized form of the Irish name Niamh, which means “bright.” Its spelling corresponds to the word for “snow” in several romance languages, including Italian and Portuguese.

The Maori term te aroha, which means “the love,” was chosen to reflect the love and generosity shown to the family — particularly by the various Maori tribes (iwi) — during the pregnancy. Ardern added:

It’s also the place where all my family are from, as well — it’s a place name. And I grew up under that mountain [Mount Te Aroha].

Neither Neve nor Te Aroha has ever been popular enough to rank as one of the top 100 girl names in New Zealand. Niamh and Aroha, however, have both made the top 100 exactly once: Niamh in 2000, Aroha in 1982.

P.S. Upon the arrival of Neve, Jacinda Ardern became the second elected head of government to give birth while in office. The first was Benazir Bhutto, who was serving as the prime minister of Pakistan when she gave birth to her daughter Bakhtawar in early 1990.

Reactions

Some initial reactions…

I was so surprised that Rumi saw no upward movement as a girl name. Remi is rising fast, Rooney is inching upward, and then Rumi — a name that sounds like a mix between the two — gets the stamp of approval from Queen Bey herself. And still it doesn’t budge. I’m scratching my head over this one.

I’m always fascinated to see how name usage is influenced by events/people that are perceived as negative. Sometimes the associations drag them down, but sometimes the mere exposure lifts them up. In the case of Harvey, we had not one but two negative things: a destructive storm and a sexual predator. And yet, the name continued to rise.

It was neat to see Eclipse debut in the data. We already knew that a few babies got the name thanks to the news, but apparently there were a few more–just enough to nudge the name up to that 5-baby threshold. I wonder how much the August solar eclipse contributed to the rise of the names Luna, Moon, and Shadow in 2017.

How about you? Did the movement (or non-movement) of any of these names surprise you?

[Disclaimer: Some of the names above were already moving in the direction indicated, and some were no doubt influenced by more than a single pop culture person/event. I leave it up to you to judge the degree/nature of pop culture influence in each case.]
