How popular is the baby name Matthew in the United States right now? How popular was it historically? Use the popularity graph and data table below to find out! Plus, see all the blog posts that mention the name Matthew.
The graph will take a few moments to load. (Don't worry, it shouldn't take 9 months!) If it's taking too long, try reloading the page.
Northern Ireland’s top baby names of 2013 were announced today.
According to provisional data from the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA), the most popular baby names are Grace (and Emily, see below!) and Jack.
Here are Northern Ireland’s projected top 10 girl names and top 10 boy names of 2013:
Girl Names
Boy Names
1. Grace 2. Emily 3. Sophie 4. Ella 5. Lucy 6. Sophia 7. Aoife 8. Jessica 9. Amelia 10. Anna
1. Jack 2. James 3. Charlie 4. Daniel 5. Harry 6. Noah 7. Ethan 8. Matthew 9. Jacob 10. Thomas
Within the top 20, the fastest risers were Ella and Luke. New to the top 20 were Ava and Ruby.
Within the top 100, the fastest risers were Elsie and Robyn for girls, Jackson and Theo for boys. The biggest drops were Shannon and Elizabeth for girls, Corey and Reece for boys.
Some of the unusual names given to Northern Ireland babies in 2013 include Boleyn, Cadhla-lilly, Chulainn, Colmcille, Finvola, Geiste, Gillespie, Jimia, Kidd, Lucymollymay, Macushla, Martin-luther, Nittelani, Ollie-j, Oraoibhe, Phoebegail, Poppy-chelle, Saorfhlaith, Svajone (Lithuanian for “dream”), Testimony and Zefrito.
Northern Ireland’s finalized 2013 list will be out next summer, so I’ll come back and update this post at that point (if it needs updating). In the meanwhile, check out the 2012 and 2007 lists.
According to New Jersey’s Asbury Park Press, “preliminary data from the state Department of Health has names like Michael and Matthew at the top of the 2013 list for boys, and Sophia and Isabella for girls.”
According to the SSA, Sophia and Isabella ranked #1 and #2 for baby girls born in New Jersey in 2012. Michael and Matthew ranked #1 and #5.
Also from the source article, this interesting fact about baby names in New Jersey’s Monmouth County:
[R]oughly one-third of the top girls and boys names are Orthodox names, like Chana, Chaya, Esther, Rivka and Batsheva for the girls, and Moshe, Chaim and Yosef for the boys. The Monmouth list, in fact, varies markedly both from the statewide baby names, as well as the national list.
UPDATE, 12/8/2013: Just spotted a different article with the full New Jersey preliminary list. Here it is:
Girl Names
Boy Names
1. Isabella 2. Sophia 3. Emma 4. Olivia 5. Ava 6. Mia 7. Emily 8. Madison 9. Sofia 10. Abigail
1. Michael 2. Matthew 3. Jacob 4. Liam 5. Joseph 6. Anthony 7. Ryan 8. Daniel 9. Ethan 10. Mason
And another interesting fact, this time about the name Sandy:
One gender-neutral name that has trended in the past year, however, did not get the surge experts were predicting some nine months after the biggest storm in New Jersey history.
“We had no babies named Sandy in July and August, when we might have been expecting that,” Waters said.
UPDATE, 5/4/2015: The actual 2013 list, from an article about the finalized 2014 list.

Once upon a time, the U.S. Social Security Administration put out annual twin name rankings (that is, rankings of the pairs of baby names given most frequently to sets of U.S. twins).
It all started in 2005 with simple, single-list rankings. Things got more interesting in 2009, when the SSA began splitting the rankings into gender-specific sub-rankings. Then in 2012, nothing. The updates stopped coming.
Now we have seven years’ worth of official twin name data from the U.S. government…and that’s it.
I used to keep these rankings in my directory, but they are so out-of-date now that I think it’s best to archive them in a single blog post, for easy reference. So, without further ado, here are the top baby names for twins born in the United States from 2005 to 2011 (in reverse order):
1. Jacob, Joshua (55 sets) 2. Matthew, Michael (52) 3. Daniel, David (50) 4. Jayden, Jordan (41) 5. Jayden, Jaylen (38) 6. Elijah, Isaiah (36) 7. Isaac, Isaiah (36) 8. Ethan, Evan (31) 9. Observations on the 2009 rankings:
#9 and #44 on the girl-girl list are “Mackenzie, Madison” and “Madison, Mckenzie.”
#15 and #23 on the girl-girl list are both “Gabriella, Isabella.” There was probably supposed to be a spelling difference somewhere, but the SSA had the pairings listed identically.
#8, #9 and #34 on the girl-boy list are “Jayda, Jayden,” “Jada, Jaden” and “Jada, Jayden.”
#10 on the girl-boy list is “Aidan, Nadia” — the only pair of anagram names I’ve spotted on these twin lists (besides Heaven/Nevaeh, of course).
#26 and #27 on the girl-boy list are “Zachary, Zoe” and “Zachary, Zoey.”
