  9. William
  10. Joseph
  11. Oliver
  12. Ryan

I find it odd that Benedict was lumped with Benjamin. They might sound similar and share the nickname “Ben,” but the two names have totally different origins: Benjamin is derived from a Hebrew name meaning either “son of the right hand” or “son of the south,” while Benedict comes from the Latin name Benedictus, meaning “blessed.”

Top baby names in Massachusetts, 2007

According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (via Boston Magazine), the most popular baby names in the state in 2007 were Ava and Ryan.

Here are Massachusetts’ top five girl names and top five boy names of 2007:

Girl names

  1. Ava
  2. Isabella
  3. Sophia
  4. Olivia
  5. Emma

Boy names

  1. Ryan
  2. Matthew
  3. Michael
  4. William
  5. Jacob

Writer Amy Derjue found these results “pretty disappointing” — not a Brady, Randy, Kevin, Beckett, or Jacoby to be found among the top 5 boy names, despite the fact that 2007 was “such a banner year in sports.”

I can’t say I share her sense of disappointment, but I do think that, given Tom Brady’s popularity, Brady might have a shot at cracking the state-wide top 5 one day. Here’s how the name has fared in recent years, according to Social Security Administration data:
