Which “Clark Family Experience” name do you like best?

The Clark Family Experience

Defunct country music band The Clark Family Experience consisted of six brothers: Alan, Aaron, Adam, Ashley, Andrew and Austin.

Which of the brothers’ names do you like best?

P.S. The entire Clark family includes 11 children. According to Old Fashioned Revivals, the other five are named Alexander and Abraham (twin boys), Avery (boy), and Aimee and Amber (twin girls).

Male names in the Domesday Book

Page of the Domesday Book

I listed all the female names in the Domesday Book a while back, so today I thought I’d complete the project by listing all the male names.

The male names below appeared in the Open Domesday database just once, except where noted. (For the record, I overlooked entries in which one person’s name was used to refer to another person, e.g., “Aelfric’s uncle.”)

The most-mentioned name within each letter group is in bold.

If you make it all the way to the bottom, your reward is a top ten list. :)

Top Ten Male Names

Which male were mentioned most often in the Domesday book? The #1 name was William, followed by Robert and Ralph:

  1. William (166)
  2. Robert (127)
  3. Ralph (124)
  4. Aelfric (88)
  5. Alwin (76) [tie]
  6. Hugh (76) [tie]
  7. Roger (73)
  8. Godwin (72)
  9. Walter (64)
  10. Godric (59)

Though the names in the book aren’t necessarily representative of name usage in England overall, it does make sense than William took the top spot. The Domesday Book was created a couple of decades after the Norman Conquest, at a time when the name William was very fashionable, thanks to William the Conqueror.

Baby name prediction: Lincoln?

The character Abraham Lincoln from the movie "Lincoln" (2012)
Abraham Lincoln from “Lincoln”

The Oscars are coming up, so now is the perfect time to ask: will the movie Lincoln (2012) make the baby name Lincoln more popular?

The movie, which has been nominated for twelve Academy Awards, was directed Steven Spielberg and stars Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States.

The baby name Lincoln is already on its way up, so we should be anticipating an increase in 2012 and 2013 usage regardless. But will the movie give the name an extra boost?

Here are the most recent numbers for the baby name Lincoln:

  • 2011: 2,145 baby boys named Lincoln
  • 2010: 1,866 baby boys named Lincoln
  • 2009: 2,010 baby boys named Lincoln
  • 2008: 1,815 baby boys named Lincoln
  • 2007: 1,654 baby boys named Lincoln
  • 2006: 1,106 baby boys named Lincoln
  • 2005: 501 baby boys named Lincoln
  • 2004: 413 baby boys named Lincoln

The name, which comes directly from the surname, can be traced back to the city of Lincoln, England. The city’s name is a condensed form of Lindum Colonia, which became the name of the settlement after the Romans took it over in the first century AD. Lindum is the Latinized form of the settlement’s original Celtic name, Lindon, which is based on a Brythonic word meaning “pool.” (It refers to Brayford Pool, a lake in the center of Lincoln.) And colonia means “colony” in Latin.

So, do you think the movie will influence the name? If yes, how?

Unusual real name: Aldaberontophoscophornia

Gravestone of Aldaberonto Fearing (1812-1905)
Aldaberonto’s gravestone

In the late 1700s and early 1800s, Abraham and Ruth Bowen of Massachusetts welcomed at least seven children:

  • John (b. 1797)
  • Amanda (b. 1799)
  • Abraham (b. 1803)
  • Jeannett (b. 1805)
  • Nathan (b. 1808)
  • Aldaberontophoscophornia (b. 1812)
  • Zephaniah (b. 1820)

Where did Aldaberontophoscophornia come from?

The source seems to be the “nonsense verse” play Chrononhotonthologos (1734) by English writer Henry Carey. The play featured a bombastic male character by the name of Aldiborontiphoscophornio.

We’ll never know why Abraham and Ruth chose such a cumbersome name for their baby girl. But we do know that Aldaberontophoscophornia rarely (if ever) used the full version of her first name anywhere. In all the records I’ve seen so far — and even on her headstone — it’s shortened to “Aldaberonto,” “Alda Beronto,” “Alda B.,” or simply “Alda.”

Aldaberontophoscophornia went on to marry a man named Andrew C. Fearing and have at least a dozen children. (The names of eleven of them are Amanda, Ellen, Andrew, George, Thatcher, Henry, Marion, William, Charles, Frank, and Emelyn.) It doesn’t look like her name was passed down to any descendants.

What are your thoughts on this name?
