Baby born aboard steamship Majestic, named Majestica

On April 13, 1927, the steamship Majestic — the largest ship in the world (at that time) — left Southampton, England, and began heading west toward New York.

Two days later, on the 15th, a baby girl was born to British passengers Matthew and Edith Ellen Ford. The baby was named Marguerite Majestica Ford — middle name in honor of the ship.

The RMS Majestic arrived in the United States on the 19th, and the New York Times recounted the story in print the following day.

The Lee family of Hawaii

Louis Lee was born in 1921 to Chinese parents living in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was one of 13 children* and became multi-lingual while working at the family grocery store in Chinatown. His language skills came in handy later on, when he got a job as a Pan Am customer service representative.

During the 1940s and 1950s, Louis and his wife Lucille had a total of eight children, six boys and two girls. I don’t know the birth order, so I’ll list their names alphabetically:

  • Dean
  • Licius
  • Louann
  • Maycevene
  • Philmund
  • Rytwin
  • Taoward
  • Worldster (who became an ophthalmologist)

Here are the name explanations I’ve found so far: Maycevene was born on May 7th (1946), Rytwin’s name was based on the phrase “right will win,” Taoward’s name was based on the phrase “going toward a goal,” and Worldster was born in late 1943 when the book One World by Wendell Willkie was popular.

*Louis’s siblings were named Anna, Daisy, Edith, Elizabeth, Elsie, Grace, James, Joseph, Lillian, Pansy, Violet, and William.

Where did they come from?

The Mexican telenovela Salomé, which originally aired from October of 2001 to May of 2002.

At the start of the series, the main character, Salomé (played by Edith González), worked as a cabaret dancer with her best friend, Karicia (played by Niurka Marcos).

Marcos’ portrayal of Karicia earned her the award for Best Supporting Actress at the Premios TVyNovelas in mid-2002.

P.S. The French word for “caress” — Caresse — is also a baby name.

In June of 1982, the Toledo Blade ran a short article about two local brothers who “enjoy the distinction of having initials which spell their names.” One was Thomas Owen Matzinger (T.O.M.), the other was James Irvin Matzinger (J.I.M.). Their dad Mike said it was “just as well” that he didn’t have any more kids, because he couldn’t think of any other sets of names to fit the pattern.

My guess is that Mike was joking, because there are several other sets of initials that could work with an M-surname like Matzinger, one of which, T.I.M., is just a letter away from T.O.M.

In fact, there are at least a couple of combinations that would work with every type of surname.

So today, in honor of the Matzingers of Toledo, I’ve come up with a long list of name-spelling initials. They’re sorted by third initial (that is, the first letter of the last name) so you can scroll straight to the set that matches up with your own surname.
