Two years ago, the massive but sparsely populated Arctic island of Greenland (which is part of the kingdom of Denmark) welcomed 716 babies.
What were the most popular names among these babies? Aviula and Ivaana for girls, and Marco and Aputsiaq for boys.
Ivaana resembles the Slavic name Ivana, but has a distinct etymology; it’s based on the Greenlandic word ivaaq, meaning “brooded egg” (i.e., an egg that is being kept warm).
Aputsiaq is based on aput, one of the many Greenlandic words for snow. It was popularized by French polar explorer Paul-Émile Victor, whose 1950 children’s book Apoutsiak, le petit flocon de neige was first published in Greenlandic (as Aputsiaq nittaalannguaq) in 1984. The book’s title implies that Aputsiaq means “snowflake,” but a more accurate definition is “snow crystal.”
One year earlier, in 2022, the top names in Greenland were Aviana and Ivalu for girls, and Inuk and Leo for boys.
Names used a single time in the Faroes last year include the girl names Døgg (“dew”) and Royða (“tufa“) and the boy names Bogi (“bow”) and Sproti (“sprout”).
Greenland’s top baby names of 2022, on the other hand, are still unknown at this point. Why? Because whoever edited the country’s English-language statistical booklet, Greenland in Figures 2023 [PDF], forgot to update the small section about baby names on page seven. :)
In 2021, the top baby names in Denmark were Alma and Oscar, the top baby names in the Faroes were Lea/Lív and Jónas, and the top baby names in Greenland were Lea/Luna and Aputsiaq/Marco.
Update, Jul. 2024: Greenland’s top baby names of 2022 — Inuk and Leo for boys, Aviana and Ivalu for girls — were finally included in Greenland’s 2024 [PDF] booklet. :)
Greenland welcomes only about 850 babies* per year. Because the number is so low, the country doesn’t bother with baby name rankings — but, recently, it has been publishing the top one or two names per gender in its annual “Greenland in Figures” report.
In 2019, the most popular names in Greenland in were…
Liam and Inuk for baby boys
Liam is an Irish short form of William, which comes (via Old French) from a Germanic name made up of the elements wil, meaning “will, desire,” and helm, meaning “helmet, protection.”
Inuk is Greenlandic for “human being, man.”
Naja and Nina for baby girls
Naja is Greenlandic for “younger sister (of a male).” The “j” makes a y-sound, so you’d pronounce it naya.
Nina is a short form of names that end in -nina, or -nine.
For the top names of 2018 and 2017 — as well as rankings for the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, and ’00s — check out the popular baby names in Greenland post from last year.
*Canada’s Nunavut welcomes roughly the same number of babies per year.
