Baby name needed: Short name that works with O’Reilly

A reader named Antoinette is expecting her second baby in November, and she’d like some help coming up with names (both male and female).

The names should:

  • Work with the surname O’Reilly, and
  • Be relatively short. (Case in point: Antoinette’s son’s full first name is Zach.)

On Antoinette’s short list right now are the names Harry and Charlie for a boy, and Zoe and Stella for a girl. She also mentions that, while her family is Irish, she and her husband “don’t really like the traditional Irish names.”

Here are some ideas I came up with:

MaleFemale
Adam
Alex
Alfie
Andy
Archie
Blake
Carl
Eric
Evan
Graham
Henry
Hugh
Isaac
Jake
James
Lane

Do you like any of the above with O’Reilly? What other names would you suggest?

Baby name needed: Girl name for Tanner’s little sister

A reader named Greg wrote to me a few days ago. He’s expecting his second child — a daughter — in a matter of months, and would like some name suggestions. He says:

We have a 1-year old son named Tanner, and we are very happy with his name. It’s easy to spell, uncommon but not weird, and sounds a little modern without being too trendy.

Here are some ideas I had:

Audrey
Bailey
Bella
Cassidy
Cleo
Darcy
Ellery
Fiona
Greta
Harper
Jillian

Do you think any of the above sound particularly good with Tanner? Are there any other name suggestions you would offer Greg?

Some of the names that go with Lydia could also work.

*This question was short and time-sensitive, so I posted it ahead of several others. I apologize to those I skipped over; I will get to your questions soon.

The Duggar family of Arkansas

Former Arkansas state legislator Jim Bob Duggar and his wife Michelle have had nineteen children — 9 daughters and 10 sons. Here are their names, from oldest to youngest:

  1. Joshua, born in 1988
  2. Jana, 1990 (twin)
  3. John-David, 1990 (twin)
  4. Jill, 1991
  5. Jessa, 1992
  6. Jinger, 1993
  7. Joseph, 1995
  8. Josiah, 1996
  9. Joy-Anna, 1997
  10. Jedidiah, 1998 (twin)
  11. Jeremiah, 1998 (twin)
  12. Jason, 2000
  13. James, 2001
  14. Justin, 2002
  15. Jackson, 2004
  16. Johannah, 2005
  17. Jennifer, 2007
  18. Jordyn-Grace, 2008
  19. Josie, 2009

They certainly stuck with their chosen theme, didn’t they?

I’m a little sad they didn’t go with alphabetical names, though. This is one of the few modern families I know of that could potentially have ended up with 26 kids.
