What was influencing this name?

Canadian R&B singer Tamia Washington — known mononymously as Tamia (pronounced tah-MEE-ah) — who became famous in the mid-1990s thanks to her association with music producer Quincy Jones.

In late 1995, Jones released the album Q’s Juke Joint, which featured dozens of established artists (e.g., Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Brandy, Coolio, Babyface, Queen Latifah) on various tracks.

Two of the tracks featured newcomer Tamia, and, as it happened, both songs — “You Put a Move on My Heart” (1995) and “Slow Jams” (1996) — were chosen as singles. Each one reached Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart, and each one also received a Grammy nomination.

Later in 1996, yet another song featuring Tamia both reached the Hot 100 (peaking at #25) and received a Grammy nomination. This one — “Missing You” by Brandy, Tamia, Gladys Knight, and Chaka Khan — came from the soundtrack of the movie Set If Off.

Tamia finally released her first album in 1998. To date, her most successful solo single is “Stranger in My House,” which was released in 2001 and reached #10 on the charts. Two years later, she was featured on the Fabolous single “Into You,” which peaked at #4.

The name Latifah, which has been appearing the U.S. baby name data since the 1970s, saw a dramatic increase in usage in the early 1990s. It even reached the top 1,000 twice.

  • 1991: 150 baby girls named Latifah

(The spelling Latifa also saw peak usage in 1990, and the versions Latifha, Latiffa, and Latifia debuted that year as well.)

Why?

Because of socially conscious hip-hop artist Queen Latifah.

She rose to fame with the release of her debut album, All Hail the Queen, released in November of 1989. It spawned five singles, including “Ladies First” and “Come Into My House.” Her follow-up album, released in mid-1991, wasn’t as commercially successful but does account for the second spike in usage in 1992.

After her initial success as a rapper, Queen Latifah branched out into acting. One of her most memorable early roles was that of Khadijah James on the TV series Living Single (1993-1998).

Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens in New Jersey in 1970. The “Latifah” part of her stage name — which she pronounces with a somewhat extended first syllable, “laa–tifah” — began as a childhood nickname:

Q: Did you choose it for yourself?

A: No, actually it was my cousin — well, sort of, I sort of chose it. We were going through the Muslim book of names when I was eight. My cousin Sharonda is Muslim, and so we came across Latifah, and I was like, “Oh, I like that.” She was like, “Yeah, I’m gonna give you that name. That name should be yours.” So, I kept it, ever since I was eight, through high school and whatever.

Queen Latifah was drawn specifically to the meaning of the Arabic name Latifah, which she has defined in various interviews using words like “delicate,” “sensitive,” “kind,” and “nice.” (The site Behind the Name defines the masculine version, Latif, as “gentle, kind.”)

Why?

A huge pop-culture push in the mid-1990s that popularized both the liqueur and the baby name.

Back when I first published this post in 2012, the Alizé website included the following explanation:

Alizé reached great heights with substantial features in music lyrics and videos. Alizé was mentioned in 30 top 10 singles from artists such as 2Pac, Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z & Queen Latifah.

Specifically, Alizé was mentioned by Tupac Shakur in “Thug Passion” (1996), by Notorious B.I.G. in “Juicy” (1994), by Jay-Z in “Can I Get A…” (1998), and by Queen Latifah in a popular remix of Brandy’s “I Wanna Be Down” (1994-ish).

The brand name Alizé comes from the French word alizé, the name of a local trade wind.
