Popular baby names in Ontario (Canada), 2016

According to a recent news release from the Government of Ontario, the most popular baby names in the province in 2016 were Olivia and Benjamin.

Here are Ontario’s top 10 girl names and top 10 boy names of 2016:

Girl Names
1. Olivia
2. Emma
3. Charlotte
4. Ava
5. Sophia
6. Abigail
7. Emily
8. Amelia
9. Mia
10. Isabella

Boy Names
1. Benjamin
2. Liam
3. Noah
4. Ethan
5. Lucas
6. William
7. Jacob
8. Oliver
9. James
10. Logan

The girls’ top 10 is basically the same as it was in 2015, except for the loss of Ella (which was in 10th last year, but only due to a tie for 9th).

In the boys’ top 10, Oliver and James replaced Nathan (now 11th) and Mason (now 14th).

Finally, according to the news release, “Lincoln makes it in the top 20 for the first time in history of Ontario baby names.”

According to the New Hampshire Vital Records Information Network (NHVRIN), the most popular baby names in the state in 2016 were Charlotte and Noah.

Here are New Hampshire’s top 10 girl names and top 10 boy names of 2016:

  5. Harper
  6. Sophia
  7. Lillian
  8. Isabella
  9. Abigail
  10. Madison

Boy names

  1. Noah
  2. William
  3. Benjamin

  7. Jackson
  8. Oliver
  9. Lucas
  10. Logan

These rankings are roughly the same as the SSA’s rankings for New Hampshire, the main different being that these rankings put Madison and Logan in 10th place, while the SSA has Ava and Jacob in 10th place.

The state is also keeping a running tally of baby names for 2017. As of yesterday, the #1 names are Charlotte and Logan.

According to New Jersey’s Department of Health, the most popular baby names in the state in 2016 were Olivia and Liam.

Here are New Jersey’s top 10 girl names and top 10 boy names of 2016:

In 2015, the top names were Isabella and Liam.

There were no replacements in the girl’s top ten, but in the boys’ top ten, Lucas replaced Benjamin (now 12th).

These rankings are almost identical to the SSA’s 2016 rankings for New Jersey, except for Olivia being #1. On the national list, Mia and Olivia are tied, and because the SSA breaks ties alphabetically, Mia ends up in the #1 spot by default.
