Update: I found info on some of the fastest-climbing names in the SSA’s news release:

Briella:

The fastest riser on the girls’ list may come from Briella Calafiore, the blonde reality star hairdresser from cable TV’s “Jerseylicious” and its spinoff, “Glam Fairy.”

(There’s seriously a show called “Jerseylicious”?)

Brantley:

For the boys, there could be some controversy over Brantley – depending on whether you are a fan of college football or country music. Arguments could be made that the popularity of the name comes from John Brantley, the quarterback for perennial powerhouse The University of Florida, or from Brantley Gilbert, the singer with the number one country hit “Country Must Be Country Wide.” If you like both football and country music, you’re a winner either way!

Iker:

The second fastest riser on the boys’ list is Iker. There may be some international influence here—Iker Casillas Fernandez is the well-known goalkeeper for both Real Madrid and the Spanish National Team. In 2010, Iker led Spain to a World Cup championship, just in time to influence the 2011 baby names list.

Angelique:

On the girls’ side, Angelique is the second biggest climber, but she may have gotten there with some magic. Angelique is the character name of a witch from the cult favorite “Dark Shadows.” She worked her witchcraft just in time for the blockbuster Hollywood remake of the 1960s TV show.

What turned Luka into a girl name (briefly) in the 1980s?

Suzanne Vega's album "Solitude Standing" (1987)
Suzanne Vega album

In 1987, the traditionally male name Luka — which had been absent from the U.S. baby name data for a couple of years — didn’t just return to the data as a boy name, but debuted with even higher usage as a girl name:

Girls named LukaBoys named Luka

1989.9
198888
198711*8
1986..
1985..
1984.7
*Debut

Why?

Because of the song “Luka” by singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega.

Despite the weighty subject matter (child abuse), the song became Vega’s most successful single, reaching #3 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart in August and earning three Grammy nominations (Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance).

“Luka” is sung from the point of view of a young abuse victim named Luka. Though Luka’s gender isn’t specified in the lyrics, a young boy plays the part of Luka in the music video:

(This video won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video, btw.)

When Vega’s then-manager asked her where she got the name, Vega answered:

A 9-year-old boy who lives in my building. Who is not abused, by the way. I like the name Luka, it’s universal. It could be a girl or boy and it could be any nationality.

A handful of U.S. parents clearly agreed with Vega regarding Luka’s gender-neutral nature back in 1987. Since then, though, the name gone back to seeing higher usage for baby boys.

What are your thoughts on the baby name Luka? Do you prefer it as a boy name or as a girl name?

Baby born in Dodge pickup truck, named Dodge (2011)

Heather Bell and Jeff Fredregill of Iowa welcomed a baby boy on January 1, 2011.

The baby wasn’t delivered at the hospital, though. He was born in the front passenger seat of their Dodge pickup as they were driving to the hospital.

So they named him Nico Dodge Fredregill.
