Baby name needed: Traditional name for baby girl

A reader named Liz is expecting a baby girl and she’d like some help coming up with a name. Here are some details:

  • Liz likes “traditional names that are not the type of name the person wearing it will be teased for,” such as Amalia, Charlotte, Sofia and Louisa/Louise.
  • Liz’s husband like “names that sound cute for a little kid but good for an adult,” such as Grace, Beatrice and Nathalie. (Liz doesn’t care for Beatrice/Beatrix, though.)

So far, Louise/Louisa is the only name both Liz and her husband can agree on.

Here are some other names that I thought might work:

Adele
Alice
Althea
Caroline
Celia
Claire
Clarice
Coralie
Emmeline
Genevieve
Felice
Gillian
Greta
Helena
Irene
Isabelle
Johanna
Josephine
Lavinia
Leona
Lucy
Lydia
Madeleine
Margaret
Mary
Naomi
Nicole
Pauline
Patrice
Philippa
Rosalie
Sabina
Susannah
Sylvia
Thea
Theresa

No name is immune to teasing, but I did bump Harriet, which is dangerously close to “hairy.”

What other names would you suggest to Liz?

Baby name needed: Middle name for a girl named Reid

A reader named Andy writes:

My wife and I are looking at using “Reid” for a girl (we don’t know what we’re having but we have the boy named locked down). My middle name is Reid, which comes from my grandmother’s maiden name. We are struggling with a middle name to sandwich between Reid and our last name, Roney* (pronounced with a long O). We want it to identify that Reid is a girl’s name.

I think a clearly feminine middle is a great idea. Let’s see…how about:

Abigail
Alyssa
Amanda
Amelia
Anastasia
Angelina
Bianca
Calista
Elizabeth
Emilia
Felicia
Genevieve
Isabella
Johanna
Juliette
Kathleen
Louise
Lydia
Melinda
Nicola
Olivia
Sophia
Susan
Susannah
Sylvia
Vanessa

I avoided R-names for obvious reasons, but I’m now wondering: would a middle containing an R sound nice? I’m kind of on the fence about it, but who knows–maybe one the following could work:

Audrianna
Beatrice
Catrina
Gabriela
Katherine
Patricia
Sabrina
Victoria

Do you guys like any of the above with the first name Reid? What other middle names would you suggest to Andy?

*The actual surname is not Roney, but it’s similar.

Baby name needed: Girl name for Madeleine’s sister

Erin and her husband have a daughter named Madeleine Josephine, and they’re expecting their second baby girl in a matter of weeks. So far they like the names Sadie and Kira, but they’re looking for other suggestions as well. Erin says,

To give you a sense of our “style” we also love the names Ava, Audrey and Abigail but they are already all in use by our family members. If this baby had been a boy we were going to choose between Henry, Ewan and William. Our last name starts with an “L” and so “L” first names are out. The baby’s middle name will be Robin.

I thought it was interesting that Sadie and Kira were favorites, because in terms of style they’re a bit different from Madeleine (and many of the other names mentioned). So, for gathering suggestions, I tried two separate brainstorms–one focusing on Kira and Sadie, the other focusing on names like Madeleine, Josephine, Abigail, etc. I mixed the results together and got:

Amelia
Amira
Anastasia
Anya
Bethany
Charlotte
Chloe
Darcy
Diane
Eleanor
Elizabeth
Ella
Evelyn
Mia
Nadia
Naomi
Nora
Odette
Rebecca
Roma
Stella
Susannah
Sylvia
Talia
Theresa
Thea
Victoria
Violet
Vivian
Zoe
