Popular baby names in Prince Edward Island (Canada), 2014

According to incomplete data from PEI’s Office of Vital Statistics, the most popular baby names in Prince Edward Island in 2014 were Olivia and Jack.

Here are PEI’s top 5 girl names and top 5 boy names of 2014:

Girl namesBoy names
1. Olivia, 10 baby girls
2. Chloe, 9
3. Ava, 8
4. Charlotte, 8
5. Lily, 8
1. Jack, 12 baby boys
2. Oliver, 10
3. Owen, 10
4. Mason, 9
5. William, 9

Last year’s #1 baby names, Brooklyn and Liam, probably didn’t even make the top 5 this year. (It’s hard to know for sure, though, as the data only covers January through November.)

My source article made a big deal about there being 6 babies named Jaxon vs. just 3 with the traditional spelling Jackson, but the gap was even bigger in 2013 when there were 11 babies named Jaxon/Jaxen/Jaxsen and just 5 named Jackson.

Sadie was 16th last year, and not in the top 20 any of the years before, so I’m thinking there are some Duck Dynasty fans up in Nova Scotia… :)

My source article says that Claire, Amelia, Sarah, Nora, and Peyton are new to the girls’ top 20 and Oliver, Luke, Gavin, Connor, John and Gabriel are new to the boys’ top 20.

Here are Nova Scotia’s rankings for 2012, 2010 and 2007.

Idaho’s annual report also includes a small section entitled “Selected Unique Baby Names, Yewneek Baybee Spellings.” Here are all of the single-use names highlighted in the 2012 report:

Unique girl namesUnique boy names
Alixathymia, Aunastasha, Beloved, Blessing, Britannica, Burdyn, Challyss, Echkoe, Exodus, Harlequinn, Idalyz, Killary, Lulubell, Lyrica, Mercy, Miracle, Mystic, Noble, Oasis, Pearadice, Savvy, Secret, Sunshyne, Theory, VersaillesAdamant, Arsin, Awesome, Cactus, Captain, Chipper, Cross, Denym, Dually, Dynamic, Falchion, Glacier, Kasteel, Kazys, Krozlee, Lock, Mehdiullah, Mogley, Natavious, Nyte, Peregrin, Pilot, Torque, Truce, Wild

A few thoughts…

  • A falchion is a type of sword. (Do they talk about falchions in Game of Thrones?)
  • I spotted another baby named Glacier in Quebec several years ago.
  • Killary would make a fantastic roller derby name! (So would the American Gladiator name Hellga.)

And, since I never wrote about the Idaho baby names of 2011, I’ll throw in the unique names from that year as well:
