Last year, the European country of Germany welcomed 677,100 babies.

What were the most popular names among these babies?

Germany doesn’t release official baby name rankings, so we don’t know for sure. But two unofficial sets of 2024 rankings — one from the Society for the German Language (GfdS), the other from name researcher Knud Bielefeld — agree (again) that Germany’s top boy name was Noah.

(The rankings by the GfdS account for over 91% of the first names bestowed in Germany in 2024, while the rankings by Bielefeld account for about 36% of the babies born in Germany in 2024. Both sets of rankings combine different spellings of the same name.)

Interestingly, the name Liam dropped off both top-10 lists last year. On the GfdS’s list it was replaced by Theo, and on Bielefeld’s list it was replaced by Henry.

Top Hebrew baby names in Israel, 5785

The country of Israel releases two sets of baby name rankings: one for the Gregorian year (e.g., 2024), the other for the Hebrew year.

I don’t usually post the Hebrew-year rankings, but I was intrigued by the latest set, which was released a couple of weeks before the end of 5785 (Oct. 2024 to Sep. 2025, roughly).

Below are Israel’s top 10 girl names and top 10 boy names — both overall and among Jewish residents specifically — for the Hebrew year 5785:

The news release suggested that Lavi, which means “lion” in Hebrew, became the most popular name for Jewish boys due to the influence of Israel’s Operation Am KeLavi (“a people like a lion”), which was launched against Iran in June of 2025. (The war lasted 12 days.)

Except…Lavi has been close to the top spot for several years now. It ranked #2 among Jewish boys in both 2023 and 2020, for instance. So did the headlines really push Lavi to #1, or would it have ended up there regardless?

Some possible explanations/influences for a few of the above:

  • Airam is “Maria” spelled backwards.
  • Cinco is the Spanish word for “five.”
  • Dorje is a Tibetan name that refers to a diamond, a thunderbolt, “or an indestructible phenomenon.” (Its literal translation is “lord of stone.”)
  • Erandi is the Purépecha word for “dawn.”
  • Ponderosa is a type of North American pine tree (Pinus ponderosa). The name refers to the tree’s heavy (or “ponderous”) wood.
  • Salacia was the Roman goddess of saltwater. Her name is based on sal, the Latin word for “salt.”
  • Spider-Gwen is the fan-created nickname of comic book character Spider-Woman (a.k.a. Gwen Stacy).
  • Trillium is a type of flower with three petals and three sepals.
  • Viliamu is the Samoan form of William.
