The population of Israel is roughly 73% Jewish and 21% Arabic (as well as 6% “other”). The Arabic population includes Muslims, Christians, and Druzes.
Previous sets of Israeli baby name rankings included the top names within each of four groups — Jewish, Muslim, Christian, and Druze — but the 2024 press release only included rankings for the Jewish community. (The top names among Jews in Israel last year were Avigail and Ariel.)
That said, one source did mention that the usage of Muhammed has been on the decline: “One in eight Muslim boys in Israel bears the name of the founder of Islam, down from one in six two decades ago.”
I haven’t posted about Israel’s top baby names within the last few years, but here are Israel’s 2020 rankings.
If you’re on the hunt for baby names with a numerological value of 7, you’re in luck! Because today’s post features hundreds of 7-names.
Before we get to the names, though — how do we know that they’re “sevens” in numerology?
Turning names into numbers
Here’s how to calculate the numerological value of a name.
First, for each letter, come up with a number to represent that letter’s position in the alphabet. (Letter A would be number 1, letter B would be number 2, and so forth.) Then, add all the numbers together. If the sum has two or more digits, add the digits together recursively until the result is a single digit. That single digit is the name’s numerological value.
For instance, the letters in the name Victoria correspond to the numbers 22, 9, 3, 20, 15, 18, 9, and 1. The sum of these numbers is 97. The digits of 97 added together equal 16, and the digits of 16 added together equal 7 — the numerological value of Victoria.
Baby names with a value of 7
Below you’ll find the most popular 7-names per gender, according to the latest U.S. baby name data. I’ve further sub-categorized them by total sums — just in case any of those larger numbers are significant to anyone.
7 via 16
The letters in the following baby names add up to 16, which reduces to seven (1+6=7).
Girl names (7 via 16)
Boy names (7 via 16)
Ana, Jada, Alba, Adaia, Fia
Cal, Chad, Jae, Dak, Efe
7 via 25
The letters in the following baby names add up to 25, which reduces to seven (2+5=7).
There’s no definitive answer, unfortunately, because various numerological systems exist, and each one has its own interpretation of the number seven. That said, if we look at a couple of modern numerology/astrology websites, we see 7 being described as “truth-seeking,” “introspective,” “intellectual,” “reserved,” and “unusual.”
We can also look at associations, which are a bit more concrete. Here are some things that are associated with the number 7:
According to data released earlier this week by Israel’s Central Bureau for Statistics (CBS), the top three most popular baby names in the country overall in 2015 were:
Mohammed
Yosef (used for male babies — both Muslim and Jewish)
Ariel (used for Jewish babies — both male and female)
The top baby names for Jewish babies specifically were Noa and Noam:
Update, Oct. 2017: Here’s an interesting fact about Israel’s 2014 rankings (which I never wrote a post about): “Eitan soared in popularity to No. 5 from 10th place in 2014, a surge attributed to that year’s war in Gaza dubbed Operation Protective Edge, or Mivtza Tzuk Eitan in Hebrew.” (Source: Times of Israel)
According to Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics, the name Ovadia has become trendy in the Middle Eastern country.
Only 36 baby boys in Israel were named Ovadia in 2012. “However, following the death of spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef in 2013, 117 babies were given this name and in 2014, 209 newborns were named after the rabbi.”
Influential cleric Ovadia Yosef, who founded the ultra-Orthodox Shas party in the mid-1980s, died in October of 2013 at the age of 93.
The baby name Ovadia — the Hebrew form of Obadiah — also saw a modest increase in usage in the United States during the same time frame:
2015: 9 baby boys named Ovadia
2014: 15 baby boys named Ovadia (6 born in NY)
2013: 11 baby boys named Ovadia (9 born in NY)
2012: unlisted
2011: 5 baby boys named Ovadia (all born in NY)
Despite its trendiness, Ovadia wasn’t popular enough to rank among the top Jewish boy names in Israel in 2014:
Top boy names among Jews
Top boy names among Muslims
Noam Ori/Uri David Yosef Eitan Itay Ariel Daniel Yonatan Moshe
Muhammad Yousef Omar Abed Adam Ali Ibrahim Mahmoud Amir Haled
And here are Israel’s top girl names:
Top girl names among Jews
Top girl names among Muslims
Noa Tamar Shira Maya Yael Adele Talia Avigail Ayala Sara
Miryam Jana Lian Malak Aline Lyn Nur
Of the 176,427 babies born in Israel in 2014, 136,000 (77.1%) were born into Jewish families and 40,427 (22.9%) were born into Arabic families.
