I don’t think I’ve ever seen a U.S. state put out a list of top gender-neutral names before. Interesting. Wish I knew what guideline/formula they were using to classify certain names as gender-neutral instead of gendered, though.

I also think it’s interesting that Zoey made the top 20, but Zoe didn’t. (Unless “Zoey” is a typo in my source article.)

I posted about bizarre baby names in Oklahoma in early 2011 — remember 12-Gage? — but the state hasn’t put out one of their fascinating “Oklahoma Baby Names Books” for 2011 yet, so I can’t dig any deeper than this. All I know is that “Oklahoma children were bestowed with 7,517 unique girls’ names and 5,255 unique boys’ names in 2011.”

Jayden jumped from 10th place in 2006 to 2nd place in 2007, impressively.

If all the different spellings of Jayden (e.g., Jaden, Jaiden, Jadon, Jaeden, Jaydon, Jaidyn, Jaydan, Jaydin) had been counted together, in fact, the entire name-group would have easily overtaken Daniel with a grand total of more than 1,340 baby boys.

The top baby names within specific ethnic/racial groups were…

One year earlier, in 2006, NYC’s top names (overall) were Ashley and Michael.

Unisex names of 2007: Peyton, Finley, Dominique, Dakota

Last year, over 60 baby names ranked in the top 1,000 for both boys and girls.

Most of these names were much more popular for one gender than for the other. London, Morgan, Jamie and Harper were clear winners for the girls, for instance, and Logan, Micah, Charlie and Parker were used far more often for boys.

But some of the names were used about equally for both genders. These “most” unisex names (for lack of a better way to describe them) were:

NameRank (m/f)Difference
Peyton125/1214
Finley794/81622
Dominique783/75231
Dakota203/23936
Jordan45/10055
Riley109/5257
Rowan366/45084

Names that came close to making the list were Kasey, Skyler, Jaylin and Devyn. (My cut-off was a difference of 100, and these four names were just over that limit.)

Also, keep in mind that this list doesn’t account for overall popularity. Dominique and Dakota are side-by-side above, but the name Dakota was given to 3,381 children last year, whereas only 653 were named Dominique.
