Baby names needed: Girl names for Thomas’ twin sisters

A reader named Eva is expecting twin girls and would like some help naming them. She says:

One of the twins should have a unisex first name and a very girly middle name. For the second twin we want a girly first name and unisex middle name.

Here are the names Eva likes so far:

  • Unisex: Avery, Harper, Morgan, Kennedy, Madison
  • Feminine: Anastasia, Michaela, Caroline, Sofia, Kristina

Her husband is only on board with Avery, Caroline, Kristina and Michaela (he prefers the spelling Makayla).

The twins will have an older brother named Thomas Aiden (nn Tommy) and their surname will be similar to Damon.

Eva’s criteria reminded me of the twins named Charlotte and Dylan I wrote about a few years ago. I think the name Charlotte is a good option in this case, but Dylan plus that surname might be D/N-overload. Here are some other possibilities:

Feminine namesUnisex names
Adeline
Amelia

Which of the above names do you like best for Tommy’s sisters? What combinations (either unisex+feminine or feminine+unisex) sound best together, do you think?

Here are a few combinations I like, just to kick things off:

  • Unisex+Feminine: Avery Helena, Cameron Nicole, Riley Caroline
  • Feminine+Unisex: Amelia Quinn, Olivia Willow, Victoria Leigh

Baby name needed: Girl name that goes with Abel

A reader named Bonny writes:

We are already decided on a boys’ name, but just can’t come up with a good girl’s name. Our firstborn is Abel Zachary. We want a girls’ name that doesn’t clash with Abel. So far we like these girls’ names: Evangelina, Arabella, Amethyst, Isabelle, Olivia, River, Violet. We want something uncommon, but not overly weird. We are stumped and just can’t decide on a girl’s name we really love that fits well with Abel.

I like most of the names on Bonny’s shortlist, but I don’t think many of them fit well with Abel.

To me, Abel is simple, unassuming, obviously biblical, and slightly rural/old-fashioned.

Amethyst and River strike me as being exotic and modern (though I’m sure Amethyst was used occasionally during the Victorian era). Both are gender-neutral names, while Abel is definitively masculine. And I’m slightly concerned that an unusual noun-name could make people think of Abel as able the adjective…you never know.

I like Evangelina, Isabelle, Arabelle and Olivia a little more with Abel, but to me they still sound too formal, too cosmopolitan. I’m not fond of the way Isabelle and Arabelle nearly rhyme with Abel. Finally, Olivia and Isabelle can no longer be described as “uncommon” since becoming trendy during the 1990s.

I do think Violet and Abel make a nice pair, though. Other names that I think fit well with Abel include:

Adina
Cara
Clara
Daria
Dinah
Edna
Eliza
Esther
Helah (the “e” is long)
Helen
Hester
Irene/Irena
Judith
Leona
Mara
Martha
Miriam
Pauline
Ruth
Selah (another long “e”)
Tabitha
Tamar/Tamara
Tirzah
Zillah

Which of the names above do you like best with Abel? What other names would you suggest to Bonny?

Celebrity baby names: Marion and Tabitha

Actors Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick welcomed twin girls (via surrogate) yesterday.

Their daughters’ names are Marion Loretta Elwell and Tabitha Hodge Broderick, according to People.

I’ll admit, those names confuse me. Here’s the way People has it written:

Born at 3:58 p.m., Marion Loretta Elwell weighed 5 lbs., 11 oz, and Tabitha Hodge Broderick weighed 6 lbs.

Is Broderick being used as a middle name for one girl, or as a surname for both? I was under the impression that their first child, James Wilkie, had Broderick as a surname. So I’m not sure what to make of the twins’ full names just yet. (I’ll keep my eyes peeled for more information.)

In the meanwhile, I’ll say that I do really like the first names, Marion and Tabitha. I especially like Marion. (Did you know that John Wayne‘s birth name was Marion?)

What do you think of the names?

Update: Both AP and NY Daily News are saying the twins are Marion Loretta Elwell Broderick and Tabitha Hodge Broderick. So it seems that Broderick is the surname, and that Marion has two middle names while Tabitha has just one.

Baby name needed: Girl name for Elizabeth’s sister

A reader named Lauren is due in about a week, but she and her husband have not yet been able to agree on a name for their second daughter:

My first daughter’s name is Elizabeth Rose. For our second I love Sara but my husband doesn’t, he likes Catherine. We haven’t even thought of a middle name yet. I like classic spellings and nothing that sounds too boyish as a nickname because of the last name Floyd.* Last night we thought of Madeline with nickname Maddy…but [we’re] not sure.

Personally, I think Catherine goes quite well with Elizabeth. Both are classic, formal-sounding names that can be shortened in a variety of ways for everyday use. But Sara and Madeline are great names as well, and a similar case could be made for either one. (Which of the three do you guys like best?)

Here are a few other names Lauren and her husband might also like:

Abigail
Amelia
Bianca
Cassandra
Caroline
Cecilia
Charlotte
Judith
Julia
Leah
Lillian
Lydia
Margaret
Martina
Mary
Melanie
Miriam
Penelope
Rachel
Rebecca
Sophia
Sylvia
Tabitha
Victoria
Vivian

Simple, short middles on par with Rose include Claire, Grace, Joy, Lynn, Marie, and Nicole.

What other names would you guys suggest? (How about combinations of firsts & middles?)

*The actual surname is not Floyd, but it is (similarly) a short F-name that is used as a masculine first name.
