Some possible explanations/influences for a few of the above:

  • Airam is “Maria” spelled backwards.
  • Cinco is the Spanish word for “five.”
  • Dorje is a Tibetan name that refers to a diamond, a thunderbolt, “or an indestructible phenomenon.” (Its literal translation is “lord of stone.”)
  • Erandi is the Purépecha word for “dawn.”
  • Ponderosa is a type of North American pine tree (Pinus ponderosa). The name refers to the tree’s heavy (or “ponderous”) wood.
  • Salacia was the Roman goddess of saltwater. Her name is based on sal, the Latin word for “salt.”
  • Spider-Gwen is the fan-created nickname of comic book character Spider-Woman (a.k.a. Gwen Stacy).
  • Trillium is a type of flower with three petals and three sepals.
  • Viliamu is the Samoan form of William.

How do these rankings stack up against the U.S. Social Security Administration’s 1997 rankings for Colorado?

The boy names look similar, but there are two significant discrepancies among the girl names: Alexandra ranked 11 spots lower (19th vs. 8th) and Gabrielle ranked 33 spots lower (75th vs. 42nd) on the federal government’s list.

Other names bestowed in Colorado in 1997 included “Elway, Jamaica, and Mars for baby boys, and October, November, Paradise, and Rejoice for baby girls.”

Elway was no doubt inspired by John Elway, the longtime Denver Broncos quarterback who was about to lead the team to its first Super Bowl victory (in January of 1998).

Baby born in Colorado City, named Colorado

Birth announcement for Colorado Johnson (1859)
Colorado Johnson’s birth announcement

On August 13, 1859 — during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush — the settlement of Colorado City was established in western Kansas Territory (near the base of Pikes Peak itself). The abundance of red sandstone in the area is what inspired the founders to use the Spanish word colorado, meaning “red,” in the settlement’s name.

A mere two weeks later, Colorado City welcomed its first baby. The Rocky Mountain News (which was just four months old at the time) published the following announcement:

BIRTH. — Born in Colorado City, Aug. 28th, Colorado Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. [William] Johnson, late of Pensylvania [sic].

In consideration of its being the first birth in the embryo city of Colorado, a share of eight lots was donated to the new comer.

Colorado City became part of the newly organized Colorado Territory in 1861. (Interestingly, the territory was not named after the city, but after the Colorado River, whose headwaters were located within the boundary of the territory.) Today, the settlement is a neighborhood within the city of Colorado Springs.

P.S. Colorado City was founded several weeks before the settlements of Auraria and Denver to the north.
