A total of 659 girl names debuted in the data last year, and the most impressive debut was made by Rumani. Here are the top debuts overall:

Raphtalia is a character in the Japanese manga/anime The Rising of the Shield Hero, and Tsumugi might come from a character in the Japanese video game franchise Danganronpa.

Ryza could be based on RZA, which was used as a (male) baby name by Rihanna and ASAP Rocky recently.

(A few extra facts: Iluminada means “illuminated” in Spanish, Ungwa means “blood” in Hopi, and Itotiani is derived from the Nahuatl word itotia, which refers to dancing. Willow trees are of the genus Salix, heather is of the genus Calluna, and various “powder puff plants” are of the genus Calliandra.)

Which girl names increased in usage the most from 2022 to 2023?

Here’s a table of the fastest-rising girl names of 2023. On the left are the top 25 increases in terms of absolute change (number of babies). On the right are the top 25 increases in terms of relative change (percentage of babies).

We got a sneak preview of the rise of Lainey in the Wyoming rankings a couple of days ago! Lainey has no doubt been influenced by country singer Lainey Wilson.

And the SSA’s news release mentioned that TikToker Kaeli McEwen is likely behind the sudden interest in Kaeli.

Many years ago, I published a list of the top debut baby names. A few years after that, I posted a list of the top one-hit wonder baby names.

So today let’s check out another fun set of “top” names: the top rises. The names below are those that increased the most in usage, percentage-wise, from one year to the next according to the SSA data.

Here’s the format: Girl names are on the left, boy names are on the right, and the percentages represent single-year jumps in usage. (For example, from 1880 to 1881, usage of the girl name Isa grew 240% and usage of the boy name Noble grew 333%.)
