Israel recently released three lists of popular baby names.

According to the Central Bureau for Statistics, the country’s top names last year were:

  • Noam and Noa for Jewish babies,
  • Mohammad and Maryam for Muslim babies, and
  • George and Maria for Christian babies.

A few years ago, a group of Israeli rabbis released a list of names they thought should be off-limits to Jewish children. Ariel, the 8th most popular name for Jewish baby boys last year, was on their forbidden name list. :)

Will the baby name Toby be getting a boost?

The Disney Channel sitcom Good Luck Charlie isn’t just helping to popularize the already-trendy girl name Charlie, but it seems to have single-handedly brought back the girl name Teddy. (On the show, the two sisters in the Duncan family are Charlotte, nicknamed “Charlie,” and Teddy.)

Will Good Luck Charlie (which began airing in April of 2010) now have a similar influence on the baby name Toby?

In December of 2011, Disney announced that the family in the sitcom would be welcoming a fifth child. Fans were given a 2-week window in which to vote for their favorite baby name via the show’s official webpage. These were the choices:

The baby, a boy, arrived during the episode that aired on June 24, 2012. He was born in an ice cream truck and given the name Toby (which had received nearly 26 million votes).

Usage of the baby name Toby has been declining in the U.S. lately:

  • 2011: 291 baby boys & 61 baby girls with the name Toby
  • 2010: 358 baby boys & 50 baby girls with the name Toby
  • 2009: 396 baby boys & 56 baby girls with the name Toby
  • 2008: 440 baby boys & 53 baby girls with the name Toby
  • 2007: 461 baby boys & 51 baby girls with the name Toby

Do you think the popular sitcom could turn this trend around?

Update, 2020: The name Toby ended up rising in usage in both 2012 and 2013 before continuing its downward trajectory. The series itself ended in early 2014.

Where did the baby name Avianca come from in 1990?

Have you seen the headlines about Avianca Bohm?

After being crowned Miss New Zealand several days ago, it was revealed that she isn’t officially a New Zealand citizen, just a New Zealand resident, so she shouldn’t have qualified to run in the first place. (She was born in South Africa.)

I’m not sure what will happen to her title, but I was excited to see her name. My first thought was, “I bet Avianca was born in 1990.” (Yes, I really thought that.)

I looked it up, and I was right!

How could I have known? Is it because I’m psychic? No, sadly — it’s because I remember that the baby name Avianca debuted in the U.S. baby name data in 1990:

  • 1992: unlisted
  • 1991: 5 baby girls named Avianca
  • 1990: 18 baby girls named Avianca [debut]
  • 1989: unlisted
  • 1988: unlisted

And how did I remember that? Well, the story behind the debut is hard to forget. It involves a drug lord, a soon-to-be president, and a deadly plane accident.

On November 27, 1989, a bomb aboard Avianca Airlines Flight 203 from Bogota, Colombia, to Cali, Colombia, was detonated minutes after takeoff. The plane went down in flames. Everyone on board, plus three more people on the ground, were killed.

The bomb had been planted by henchmen working for Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar. The intended target was presidential candidate Cesar Gaviria. Gaviria wasn’t on the flight, though, and he did indeed go on to become the president of Colombia. Escobar, on the other hand, was killed by the Colombian National Police several years later.

The incident was all over the news, giving the word “Avianca” — an acronym for Aerovías del Continente Americano (translation: Airways of the American Continent) — quite a bit of exposure. This is what led to Avianca being used as a girl name on nearly 20 birth certificates in the U.S. the following year.

If Avianca Bohm keeps her crown and makes it to Miss Universe, I hope they skip all the questions about world peace and just ask her about her name. (Are you listening, Donald Trump?)

Update: Avianca Bohm was stripped of her crown in late July. Talia Bennett, the first runner-up, subsequently became the new Miss New Zealand.
