What gave the baby name Tiana a boost in 2010?

According to the U.S. baby name data, the name Tiana came close to doubling in usage in 2010:

  • 2012: 712 baby girls named Tiana [rank: 440th]
  • 2011: 822 baby girls named Tiana [rank: 386th]
  • 2010: 970 baby girls named Tiana [rank: 331st]
  • 2009: 504 baby girls named Tiana [rank: 598th]
  • 2008: 480 baby girls named Tiana [rank: 642nd]

What accounts for that sudden spike?

The very first African-American Disney Princess.

Tiana (pronounced tee-ah-nah) was the protagonist of the animated movie The Princess and the Frog, which came out in December of 2009.

The movie, a modern adaptation of the German fairy tale “The Frog Prince,” was set in New Orleans in the 1920s.

Tiana was a hardworking waitress who dreamed of opening her own restaurant. After being persuaded to kiss a frog who was actually a prince, though, Tiana was unexpectedly turned into a frog as well. So the two frogs set off on a journey through the bayou in search of the voodoo priestess who might be able to restore them both to human form.

The Princess and the Frog was a success at the box office — though it might have been an even bigger success had the record-breaking sci-fi film Avatar not been released one week later.

So, how did the character come to be called Tiana?

She was initially named Maddy (a diminutive of the French name Madeleine) in the film’s treatment, which was written by co-directors Ron Clements and John Musker in early 2006.

A year later, Disney revealed her name in a movie announcement:

A musical set in the legendary birthplace of jazz — New Orleans — “The Frog Princess” will introduce the newest Disney princess, Maddy, a young African-American girl living amid the charming elegance and grandeur of the fabled French Quarter.

The project drew criticism, though — particularly from the African-American community. Some people thought, for instance, that “Maddy” sounded too much like “Mammy.”

In response, Disney made some changes. And among those changes was a new name for the main character.

Clements claimed that Tiana meant “princess” in Greek, but this isn’t the case. (The princess association may have arisen from the name’s similarity to that of Princess Diana.) Rather, Tiana can be considered a short form of names that end with -tiana, like Tatiana and Christiana, or else an elaborated form of Tia.

Charles Barkley named his baby after a mall in Delaware

On an episode of his podcast The Steam Room, former basketball star Charles Barkley mentioned that Syndey was his “favorite girl name” and that he’d use it for a daughter if he ever had another.

Then he revealed how he named his first daughter (and only child), Christiana:

Well she’s named after a mall, in fairness. There’s a Christiana Mall in Delaware that I used to always go by. That’s how she got her name, Christiana.

When co-host Ernie Johnson asked why he named his daughter after a mall, Charles answered:

I don’t know. I just liked the mall.

Later in the conversation, Ernie joked, “If you’d had a son, how about Orange Julius?” Charles one-upped him with: “Burger King.”

The Christiana Mall was named for its location — the community of Christiana in northern Delaware. The location was named after the Christina River, which, in turn, was named after 17th-century Swedish queen Christina. The river was once part of Sweden’s only New World colony, New Sweden, which existed from 1638 to 1655.

Here’s how to calculate the numerological value of a name.

First, for each letter, come up with a number to represent that letter’s position in the alphabet. (Letter A would be number 1, letter B would be number 2, and so forth.) Then, add all the numbers together. If the sum has two or more digits, add the digits together recursively until the result is a single digit. That single digit is the name’s numerological value.

What does the number three mean in numerology?

There’s no definitive answer, unfortunately, because various numerological systems exist, and each one has its own interpretation of the number three. Vicki Betts, a librarian at the University of Texas, put together an interesting list of female names using the 1860 census records for Smith County in East Texas.

Here’s some background information, per Vicki:

Ninety per cent of the people had emigrated to the county within the preceding ten years, 95.8% born in the states of the future Confederacy, 1.8% in the border states, 1.6% in northern states, and 0.8% in foreign countries. Therefore, these name should be fairly representative of Southern female names in general, with the exception of Alamo, Texas, Texana, etc.

Here are some thoughts I had:

  • Location names were more common than I thought they’d be. Seven females named Missouri? Six named Tennessee? Huh.
  • I love that Emmer appeared 22 times, while Emma appeared a mere 3 times.
  • The Battle of Cerro Gordo (1847) inspired a handful of namesakes. Cerro gordo is Spanish for “fat hill.”
  • Hutoka: Or, The Maid of the Forest: a Tale of the Indian Wars (1846) by Osgood Bradbury inspired several hundred namesakes nationwide. The book claimed that the fictitious Native American name Hutoka meant “springing fawn.”
  • Martin Van Buren — no doubt the inspiration behind Vanburena — was president of the U.S. from 1837 to 1841.
  • I’m thinking Vunavista was based on buena vista, Spanish for “good view.”
