Feeling nudged to choose a baby name that contains the letter-pair DG?
It’s an uncommon combination, but I’ve tracked down a few dozen options for you in this post!
Before we get to the names, though, let’s learn…
Where did -DGE come from in English?
French scribes, essentially.
In Old English, the “soft g” sound was rare, and it only occurred at the end of a word. When it did pop up, it was spelled with the digraph CG.
After the Norman Conquest in 1066, the ruling class of England spoke Anglo-Norman French. Over time, “the French-educated scribes [began] imposing traditional French spelling rules on English.”
The Normans had brought with them “soft g” words that utilized the letters G and I (which later evolved into J), but for native English words that contained the same sound, they decided to swap out CG for the trigraph DGE.
Some examples…
Old English
Modern English
brycg
bridge
ecg
edge
hecg
hedge
hrycg
ridge
wecg
wedge
Words derived from Anglo-Norman that happen to have the same ending include judge, pledge, and badge, and budge.
Now, on to the names!
Names with DG
Below are names that feature either DGE or the letter-pair DG (if it represents the same “soft G” sound). All of these names come from the SSA’s baby name data.
I wasn’t planning to post baby name rankings for any individual U.S. state before the release of the SSA’s official national rankings (in May), but Wyoming’s were just too interesting to ignore.
Last year, landlocked Wyoming — the least populous U.S. state — welcomed 6,050 babies. The top names among these babies were Charlotte and Noah, according to Wyoming’s Department of Health.
Here are Wyoming’s top 10 girl names and top 10 boy names of 2022:

Bridger! That’s a name I wasn’t expecting.
According to the SSA’s state-specific data, Bridger’s best showing in Wyoming so far (through 2021) was 20 baby boys in 2016. It ranked 16th state-wide that year.
Bridger is also seeing relatively strong usage in nearby states such as Idaho, North Dakota, and Utah.
On a national level, Bridger isn’t anywhere near the top 10, but it does regularly rank within the boys’ top 1,000. Interestingly, usage jumped in 2021:
2021: 356 baby boys named Bridger [rank: 721st]
2020: 239 baby boys named Bridger [rank: 929th]
2019: 242 baby boys named Bridger [rank: 901st]
2018: 229 baby boys named Bridger [rank: 925th]
Here’s a visual:
I’m not sure what accounts for the sudden increase. The TV series Bridgerton? The Star Wars character Ezra Bridger? (Any ideas?)
What are your thoughts on the name Bridger? Where do you think Bridger ranked nationally in 2022?
If you’re on the hunt for baby names with a numerological value of 9, you’re in luck! Because today’s post features hundreds of 9-names.
Before we get to the names, though — how do we know that they’re “nines” in numerology?
Turning names into numbers
Here’s how to calculate the numerological value of a name.
First, for each letter, come up with a number to represent that letter’s position in the alphabet. (Letter A would be number 1, letter B would be number 2, and so forth.) Then, add all the numbers together. If the sum has two or more digits, add the digits together recursively until the result is a single digit. That single digit is the name’s numerological value.
For instance, the letters in the name Rockwell correspond to the numbers 18, 15, 3, 11, 23, 5, 12, and 12. The sum of these numbers is 99. The digits of 99 added together equal 18, and the digits of 18 added together equal 9 — the numerological value of Rockwell.
Baby names with a value of 9
Below you’ll find the most popular 9-names per gender, according to the latest U.S. baby name data. I’ve further sub-categorized them by total sums — just in case any of those larger numbers are significant to anyone.
9
The letters in the unisex baby name Ace add up to 9.
9 via 18
The letters in the following baby names add up to 18, which reduces to nine (1+8=9).
Girl names (9 via 18)
Boy names (9 via 18)
Lea, Gaia, Ela, Acacia, Addi
Can, Adal, Acie, Edi, Jag
9 via 27
The letters in the following baby names add up to 27, which reduces to nine (2+7=9).
There’s no definitive answer, unfortunately, because various numerological systems exist, and each one has its own interpretation of the number nine. That said, if we look at a couple of modern numerology/astrology websites, we see 9 being described as “humanitarian,” “tolerant,” “helpful,” “determined,” and “compassionate.”
We can also look at associations, which are a bit more concrete. Here are some things that are associated with the number 9:
Pregnancy (9 months long)
Baseball (9 players on the field; 9 innings)
K-9 (“canine”) police dog units
“Cloud nine” (expression)
“Nine lives” of a cat (expression)
“To the nines” (expression)
“The whole nine yards” (expression)
What does the number 9 mean to you? What are your strongest associations with the number?

A reader named Heath is expecting his third child, a boy, and would like some name suggestions. Here’s what he says:
I’m Heath, wife is Aspen, daughter is Channing and son is Deacon so we’re looking for a name that most kids won’t have but also want something that isn’t feminine, will get him picked on or doesn’t sound like we are trying too hard.
Here are some of the names they’ve been considering:
My favorite is Justice but that has no chance with my wife. She likes Ridge but I quickly vetoed that. Her favorite is Easton but I was looking for something more. Some others that we have thought about is Beckett, Kingston or Tate but again I’m not overly thrilled.
Many of the names above come from surnames, so that’s what I focused on as I brainstormed:
Baron Bridger Brogan Corbin Dax Edison Evander Ezra Felix Finn Fletcher
Franklin Fulton Garrison Graham Griffin Grover Hawthorn Jasper Lachlan Lawson Lennon
Which of the above do you like best with Channing and Deacon? What other names would you suggest to Heath?
