I recently updated my old
Anagram Baby Names post to make it much more comprehensive. As I worked on it, though, I noticed that many of those sets of names had obvious similarities, such as the same first letters and/or the same rhythm.
So I thought I’d make a second, shorter list of anagram names that were less conspicuously similar. Specifically, I wanted the second list to feature sets of names with different first letters and different numbers of syllables.
And that’s what you’ll find below — pairs of anagram names that are relatively distinct from one another. So much so that, at first glance (or listen), some might not even strike you as being anagrammatic at all. :)

Looking for a surname-inspired baby name with a connection to Catholicism?
Here are more than 200 options, most of which come from Catholic Englishmen martyred during the 16th and 17th centuries.
Because the goal was to include as many
realistic baby names as possible, I interpreted “surname” and “saint” liberally in some cases. Xavier is not technically a surname, for instance, and many of the folks below are not yet full-fledged saints.
The hyperlinked names will take you to popularity graphs.

Which of the above do you like best?
And, what other saint-inspired surnames would make good baby names? I’m sure I missed a few. Let me know in the comments!
On February 10, the Civil Registration Act went into effect in the Mexican state of Sonora (which is right across the border from Arizona).
Article 46 of the act allows local authorities to reject baby names they deem derogatory, discriminatory, defamatory, libelous and meaningless, among other things.
The state also banned 61 specific baby names, and will likely ban more names in the future. All of the banned names came directly from Sonora’s birth registries (meaning that each has been used at least once already).
After doing some digging, I finally found the full list of banned names on a Mexican news site. Here it is:
Aceituno Aguinaldo All Power Aniv de la Rev (short for “anniversary of the revolution”) Batman Beneficia (meaning “benefits”) Burger King Cacerolo Calzón (meaning “panties”) Caraciola Caralampio Cesárea Cheyenne Christmas Day Circuncisión (meaning “circumcision”) Culebro Delgadina (meaning “the skinny girl.” It’s from the Mexican folk song “La Delgadina.”) Diódoro Email Escroto (meaning “scrotum”) Espinaca (meaning “spinach”) Facebook Fulanita (meaning “so-and-so” or “what’s-her-name”) Gordonia Gorgonio Harry Potter Hermione Hitler Hurraca Iluminada Indio James Bond Lady Di Marciana (meaning “martian”) Masiosare (meaning “if one should dare,” roughly. It’s from the phrase mas si osare, which is part of the Mexican National Anthem.) Micheline Panuncio Patrocinio (meaning “patronage” or “sponsorship”) Petronilo Piritipio Pocahontas Pomponio Privado (meaning “private”) Procopio Rambo Robocop Rocky Rolling Stone Sobeida Sol de Sonora Sonora Querida Telésforo Terminator Tránsito (meaning “transit”) Tremebundo (meaning “terrifying” or “terrible”) Twitter Usnavy Verulo Virgen (meaning “virgin”) Yahoo Zoila Rosa
Facebook is the legal first name of at least 2 human beings at this point. Amazing. Robocop, I must admit, has been on my “baby names I am dying to find in the wild” list for many years. At last, proof that it exists! Exciting stuff. (Haven’t yet come across any babies named Chucknorris, however. Fingers still crossed on that one.) Hermione? I can see why Sonora would object to “Harry Potter” and “James Bond,” but Hermione by itself (as opposed to “Hermione Granger”) makes no sense. Hermione is a legitimate (and lovely) name that existed long before the Potter books.
What are your thoughts? And, which name on the list above shocked you the most?

Cassandra is expecting a baby boy in early June and she’d like some name suggestions.
She’s looking for “strong, unusual names” with one or two syllables. So far, Cassandra likes the name Fox and her partner prefers Aston. The baby’s surname will begin with an L and have one syllable. (Think Ladd.)
When I hear “strong,” I think of plosives (
p, b, t, k, etc.). So I focused on short names with strong sounds that aren’t currently in the top 100. Here’s what I came up with:
Bennett Brent Brett Brock Cash Chet Clark Colt Corbin Craig Dane Dax Deacon Drake Duke Emmett Flint Frank Garrett Grant Gray Holt Jax Jett Kai Keaton King Knox Paxton Pierce Quinn Rex Rhett Stone Tate Trent Tucker Victor Zack Zane
Which of the above do you like best? What other names would you suggest to Cassandra?
Update: The baby has arrived!

A reader named Heath is expecting his third child, a boy, and would like some name suggestions. Here’s what he says:
I’m Heath, wife is Aspen, daughter is Channing and son is Deacon so we’re looking for a name that most kids won’t have but also want something that isn’t feminine, will get him picked on or doesn’t sound like we are trying too hard.
Here are some of the names they’ve been considering:
My favorite is Justice but that has no chance with my wife. She likes Ridge but I quickly vetoed that. Her favorite is Easton but I was looking for something more. Some others that we have thought about is Beckett, Kingston or Tate but again I’m not overly thrilled.
Many of the names above come from surnames, so that’s what I focused on as I brainstormed:
Which of the above do you like best with Channing and Deacon? What other names would you suggest to Heath?
