How popular is the baby name Chance in the United States right now? How popular was it historically? Use the popularity graph and data table below to find out! Plus, see all the blog posts that mention the name Chance.
The graph will take a few moments to load. (Don't worry, it shouldn't take 9 months!) If it's taking too long, try reloading the page.
The name Nevaeh got a lot of attention in the early 2000s, but, long before that, another Heaven-based baby name, Heavenly, debuted in the U.S. baby name data:
1965: 7 baby girls named Heavenly
1964: unlisted
1963: 6 baby girls named Heavenly [debut]
1962: unlisted
1961: unlisted
Where did it come from?
A character in the 1962 movie Sweet Bird of Youth.
Heavenly Finley was played by actress Shirley Knight, who was nominated for an Oscar for “Best Actress in a Supporting Role” for the part.
The movie’s main character, Chance Wayne (played by Paul Newman), similarly drew attention to the name Chance — so much so that Chance was one of the fastest-rising names of 1962:
1964: 49 baby boys named Chance
1963: 52 baby boys named Chance
1962: 36 baby boys named Chance
1961: 8 baby boys named Chance
1960: 6 baby boys named Chance
Sweet Bird of Youth was based on the 1959 play of the same name written by Tennessee Williams.
Do you like the name Heavenly? Do you like it more or less than Nevaeh?
P.S. Interestingly, a few years later, the name Heavenly was used for a male movie character in the biker flick The Wild Angels (1966).
In 2015, Emma replaced Lea as the top girl name, William joined Thomas as the top boy name, Beatrice replaced Charlie in the girls’ top 10, and Noah replaced Olivier in the boy’s top 10. (Here are the 2014 rankings.)
[UPDATE, May 2017 – The Quebec rankings for 2015 have since been updated and it looks like William has pulled ahead of Thomas to become the sole #1 name.]
Of all 9,096 girl names on Quebec’s list in 2015, 74.5% of them were used a single time. Here are some of the unique girl names:
Allegresse – the French word allégresse means “joy, elation.”
Angelhephzibah
Brightness
Cathalaya-Skuessi
Clerilda
Confiance – the French word confiance means “confidence, trust.”
Doxalyah
Etky
Eubenice
Evlly
Exaucee – the French verb exaucer means “to grant a wish.”
Flory Comfort
Garance – the French word garance refers to a shade of red created from the root of the madder plant.
Once upon a time, the U.S. Social Security Administration put out annual twin name rankings (that is, rankings of the pairs of baby names given most frequently to sets of U.S. twins).
It all started in 2005 with simple, single-list rankings. Things got more interesting in 2009, when the SSA began splitting the rankings into gender-specific sub-rankings. Then in 2012, nothing. The updates stopped coming.
Now we have seven years’ worth of official twin name data from the U.S. government…and that’s it.
I used to keep these rankings in my directory, but they are so out-of-date now that I think it’s best to archive them in a single blog post, for easy reference. So, without further ado, here are the top baby names for twins born in the United States from 2005 to 2011 (in reverse order):

#15 and #23 on the girl-girl list are both “Gabriella, Isabella.” There was probably supposed to be a spelling difference somewhere, but the SSA had the pairings listed identically.
#8, #9 and #34 on the girl-boy list are “Jayda, Jayden,” “Jada, Jaden” and “Jada, Jayden.”
#10 on the girl-boy list is “Aidan, Nadia” — the only pair of anagram names I’ve spotted on these twin lists (besides Heaven/Nevaeh, of course).
#26 and #27 on the girl-boy list are “Zachary, Zoe” and “Zachary, Zoey.”

Please note that I did include names in the gray area between one syllable and two syllables. The deciding factor on these particular names will be your own interpretation/accent, so be sure to test the names out loud before making any final decisions. (“Hayle,” for instance — would you say it like Hale, or like Hailey? Or “Rise” — is it rize, or ree-sah?)
Many of these names also happen to be unisex, so they appear on the one-syllable boy names list as well.
