Baby name story: Cameron

Diana Crouch of Texas contracted COVID-19 pneumonia in August of 2021, when she was 18 weeks pregnant.

She was admitted to a hospital in Houston and placed on a ventilator. When her condition didn’t improve, she was moved to a life support machine. (Diana suffered “a heart attack, multiple seizures and a stroke on one particularly severe day in September.”)

In November, after gradual improvement, Diana’s condition “plateaued.” So her doctor, Cameron Dezfulian, performed a C-section on November 10. (The baby wasn’t due until January 9.)

Diana was finally released from the hospital on December 23.

She and her husband decided to name their baby boy Cameron Andrew Crouch — first name in honor of the doctor who they credit “with helping to save both Diana and Cameron’s lives.”

Popular baby names in Casper (Wyoming), 2020

In 2020, the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper welcomed 892 babies. The names of about 620 of these babies were shared online via the hospital’s website. A few days ago, the hospital “mined those announcements for our most popular names list for 2020,” finding that the most frequently occurring names for girls was Paisley and for boys was Jackson.

I don’t usually post rankings from non-governmental sources, but, in this case, there were just so many names in comparison to the size of the city (about 58,000 residents) that I decided to go ahead and publish the full list…

Happy birthday, Elvis!

It’s hard to put into words just how bizarre 2020 was.

Despite this…people still had babies in 2020, and people still paid attention to pop culture in 2020. (In fact, thanks to quarantine, many people probably paid a lot more attention to pop culture than usual last year.) So, let’s put the seriousness of 2020 aside for a second and kick off the annual Pop Culture Baby Name Game!

Of course, “pop culture” includes not just things like movies and music and social media, but also anything that was in the news — including COVID-19, Black Lives Matter, and the U.S. presidential election.

Which baby names will see higher usage — or appear for the very first time — in the 2020 SSA baby name data thanks to pop culture?

  • “In my opinion this unprecedented situation will affect naming towards something “bolder” or “more badass” baby names and so you’ll probably see a spike of certain names like King, Major or Royal.” (Gheba)
  • “I’d bet on the rise of virtue names, or at least modern version of virtue names, like Brave/Bravery, Courage, Honor, etc. And I’d say names like Legend, Messiah, Legacy, Major, King, will probably rise some more too.” (Skizzo)
  • “I think it will also affect which media influence names this year. Eg we’ll miss out on names inspired by Olympic athletes, but might see even more from Netflix and YouTube.” (Clare)

Mystery baby name: Dameron

The baby name Dameron has been used sparingly for both genders. It’s only a one-hit wonder so far on the girls’ list, but, notably, it was the highest-hitting one-hit wonder the year it showed up:

  • 1971: unlisted
  • 1970: unlisted
  • 1969: 15 baby girls named Dameron [debut]
  • 1968: unlisted
  • 1967: unlisted

So, what’s behind that spike?

I don’t know for sure. My only theory so far makes sense in some ways, but not in others.

In February of 1969, an episode of the TV crime drama Ironside featured a bad-guy character named Dameron (played by Skip Homeier). Ironside was a popular show, and the timing was just right, but…this was a male character, and he was only featured in the last 15 minutes of the episode.

Could the character be the cause, or is this just a strange coincidence?

(Here are two facts that could potentially be clues: Cameron saw slightly higher usage as a girl name in 1969, and the rarity Tameron popped up on the girls’ side of the list the same year.)
